Chapter 6 - The Federal Intervention“Marcus?” I gasped, my knees nearly buckling beneath me from sheer exhaustion and relief.

Marcus stepped forward quickly, catching me by the elbows before I could collapse onto the wet asphalt. He took off his heavy trench coat and draped it over my shivering shoulders, his eyes scanning my torn blouse, scratched arms, and bare feet with immediate, professional alarm.
“You’re freezing. Get in the car, right now,” Marcus ordered, guiding me into the warm leather interior of the federal vehicle. Two armed investigators sat in the front seats, their laptops open, displaying live data feeds.
Before I could even catch my breath, a sleek black Mercedes pulled up aggressively behind us, blocking our vehicle in.
Christopher jumped out of the driver’s seat, his face contorted in a mask of manic fury. He strode directly toward our SUV, slamming his fist against the passenger window.
“Sabrina! Get out of that car right now! You’re coming home!” Christopher screamed, his voice cracking with desperation.
Marcus calmly pressed a button on the door panel, lowering the window an inch. He didn't flinch. Instead, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek leather folder bearing the gold seal of the United States Department of Justice.
“Christopher Mercer, I presume?” Marcus asked, his voice dripping with icy formal authority.
Christopher froze, staring at the federal badge resting in Marcus’s palm. The color drained entirely from his face. “Who... who are you? This is a private family matter. My wife is unwell—she suffers from severe medical blackouts—”
“Your wife is a senior financial auditor who just transmitted an encrypted digital archive containing four years of corporate embezzlement records, unauthorized shell-company transfers, and audio confessions regarding your family’s systemic drugging and coercion scheme directly to my federal task force,” Marcus interrupted smoothly, his eyes locking onto Christopher with predatory calm.
Christopher stumbled backward a step, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. “That’s... that’s a lie. She’s crazy—she doesn't know what she’s—”
“Federal marshals secured your father’s estate in Pacific Heights approximately three minutes ago,” Marcus continued, tapping his wristwatch. “Raymond Mercer and Samuel Vance are currently being placed under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy. And you, Christopher, are coming with us downtown for questioning.”
As two armed federal agents stepped out of our SUV and moved swiftly toward Christopher, pinning his arms behind his back in cold steel handcuffs, I watched through the tinted window.

Christopher looked directly at me, his eyes wide with utter terror and disbelief, realizing too late that the woman he had tried to reduce to an obedient, unconscious puppet had outsmarted his entire dynasty.
I didn't look away. I let him stare.
