Chapter 5 - The Lobby ExecutionThe lobby of Apex Logistics was a cathedral of corporate glass, polished chrome, and towering green ficus trees. It smelled of expensive espresso from the lobby cafe and the sterile, hurried energy of people rushing to morning meetings.

At exactly 9:55 AM, I stepped through the revolving glass doors.
I wasn't wearing sweats or looking like the broken, betrayed housewife Owen expected me to be. I wore a tailored, charcoal-grey pantsuit, stiletto heels that clicked with sharp, commanding rhythm against the marble floor, and dark oversized sunglasses that hid my eyes.
I didn't go to the reception desk. I walked straight toward the bank of private elevators reserved for senior executives.
A security guard stepped forward, blocking my path with a polite, practiced smile. "Excuse me, ma'am, do you have an appointment or a visitor badge?"
Before I could answer, a familiar, flustered voice called out across the lobby.
"Clara?!"
I turned my head slowly.
Owen was standing near the cafe counter, holding a cardboard tray of coffees and looking like absolute death. His suit was wrinkled, his hair was unstyled, and the dark circles under his eyes looked like purple bruises. He had clearly been sleeping in his office or crashing on a couch for the last three days.
"What... what are you doing here?" Owen stammered, hurrying over, dropping one of the coffee cups as he tripped slightly over his own shoes. The dark liquid splashed across the polished floor, but he didn't even care. "Clara, please, we need to talk. My accounts are frozen, my boss called me into HR this morning asking about some weird real-estate default notice, and I can't even buy lunch—"
The lobby had gone quiet. Several employees standing near the elevators stopped to stare at the disheveled director pleading with a sharply dressed woman.
I slowly slid my sunglasses down the bridge of my nose, looking at him with absolute, freezing indifference.
"Good morning, Owen," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the open space. "I see you're still struggling with basic coordination. Must be hard without someone cutting your steak for you."
"Clara, stop it," he hissed, grabbing my arm desperately. "Please. Call your lawyer. Tell him to lift the freeze. I made a mistake, I know I did, but you can't just ruin my life over—over a lapse in judgment! We've been married for five years!"
"Five years," I repeated softly, stepping out of his grip with a look of disgust. "Five years of you pretending to love me while plotting behind my back with my own flesh and blood. And you call it a 'lapse in judgment'?"
Before he could answer, the glass revolving doors spun again, and Marcus entered accompanied by a local court bailiff carrying a thick, official-looking leather satchel.
Marcus walked right up to Owen, pulling out a crisp set of legal documents stamped with the seal of the state supreme court.
"Owen Cross?" Marcus asked professionally.
Owen stared at the papers, his face turning ghostly pale. "Who... who are you?"
"Marcus Vance, lead counsel for Evelyn Vale," Marcus announced loudly enough for half the lobby to hear. "You are hereby served with formal notice of divorce proceedings, a restraining order barring you from approaching petitioner or her family, a civil suit for corporate asset dissipation, and—most importantly—an immediate eviction notice for the premises currently occupied by Apex Logistics, as the underlying commercial deed is held entirely under the sole proprietorship of Ms. Vale."
The lobby erupted into quiet gasps.
Several junior executives standing nearby whispered behind their hands. Did he just say his wife owns the building?
Owen stumbled back, his eyes darting frantically from Marcus to me. "That... that's impossible. Apex owns this building! The board of directors—"
"The board of directors answers to the majority trust holder," I interrupted quietly, stepping right up to his face. "And that's me, Owen. You didn't build this life. You were just a guest living in my house, working in my building, wearing clothes bought with my inheritance. And now? Your lease has expired."
May you like
Marcus pressed the documents directly into Owen’s trembling, limp hands.
"Have a wonderful Tuesday, Mr. Cross," Marcus smiled coldly. "Don't forget to pack your desk before security escorts you out."
