Chapter 6 - The Longest Night

The hours ticked by like dripping water on a stone.

Midnight came and went. The tactical monitors in the study flickered with scrambled audio feeds from the Queens warehouse raid—the sharp, deafening cracks of suppressed gunfire, the shouting of commands in Italian and English, the heavy thud of doors being breached.

I sat at the desk, refusing to move, my fingers flying across my laptop as I locked down every digital footprint the Rossi family had left across New York financial institutions, freezing their capital accounts one by one.

At 2:45 AM, the encrypted radio on the desk hissed to life.

“All sectors secure,” Luca’s voice crackled through the speaker, heavy with exhaustion and triumph. “Victor Rossi is in custody. The warehouse is ours. Casualties on our side are minimal.”

A breath I felt like I’d been holding for three hours rushed out of my lungs. I slumped back into the leather chair, my hands shaking uncontrollably as the adrenaline finally began to drain from my veins.

“And... Mr. Santoro?” I asked into the microphone, my voice trembling.

“He’s coming up now, Mrs. Santoro,” Luca replied gently.

Twenty minutes later, the private elevator chimed.

Heavy, weary footsteps echoed down the private hallway. The double doors swung open, and Niko walked into the study.

His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt stained with smudges of soot and dark smears of dirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal corded, blood-streaked forearms. A small graze cut across his cheekbone, and his dark hair was wildly disheveled. He looked tired, bruised, and battle-worn.

He looked terrifyingly alive.

I stood up slowly from the desk, my legs feeling like lead.

Niko stopped halfway across the room. His grey eyes locked onto mine, searching my face with an intensity that stripped away every defense I had left.

“Is it over?” I whispered.

“It’s over,” Niko rasped, his voice rough with exhaustion. “Victor Rossi will never threaten your father—or anyone else—ever again.”

I took a step forward. Then another.

When I reached him, Niko didn't wait. He closed the remaining distance, wrapping his strong, calloused arms around my waist and pulling me flush against his chest with a desperate, crushing strength. I buried my face in his damp, soot-stained shirt, wrapping my arms around his neck, breathing in the scent of smoke and rain and pure survival.

“You idiot,” I choked out, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. “You absolute idiot.”

Niko buried his face in my hair, his lips pressing softly against my temple, sending a shiver of pure electricity racing down my spine.

“I told you,” he murmured against my skin, his voice thick with emotion. “I’m too stubborn to die.”

He pulled back just enough to look down into my eyes, his thumb gently wiping away a tear on my cheek. The cold, untouchable mob boss had vanished, leaving only a man who had fought through hell to protect his home.

And then, as his gaze dropped to my lips—not with cold evaluation, but with a raw, burning hunger that had been simmering since the first moment we met—Niko leaned down and kissed me.

It wasn't a marriage of convenience anymore.

It was a reckoning.

And as his lips parted mine with fierce, possessive tenderness, the last wall around my heart crumbled into dust.
