Chapter 5 - The Trap SpringsPanic surged through my veins like liquid nitrogen. Vanessa’s footsteps were already echoing on the marble foyer floor, heading toward the grand staircase.

I didn't have time to replace the floorboard properly or lock the metal box. I shoved the lockbox back into the hiding compartment, dropped the wooden plank into place so it was roughly aligned, and bolted toward the suite’s adjoining bathroom just as the bedroom door clicked open.
“Hello? Is anyone in here?” Vanessa’s voice rang out, sharp and suspicious.
I stood frozen against the tiled bathroom wall, holding my breath, my hand clamped tightly over my mouth.
I heard her heels click across the hardwood bedroom floor, stopping near the walk-in closet. A long, agonizing pause stretched through the air.
“Who left this open?” she muttered to herself, her voice dangerously cold.
The sound of wood shifting against the floor reached my ears. She had noticed the misaligned floorboard.
I quietly slipped my hand into my apron pocket, activating the emergency GPS beacon and live audio stream linked directly to Nathan’s secure phone in the panic room below. If she found me here, it was over.
Suddenly, a loud, crashing sound echoed from downstairs, shattering the quiet tension.
“Mr. Cole! Sir, you can't go in there!” the head butler’s voice shouted from the main hallway.
Vanessa snapped upright, abandoning her investigation of the closet. “What on earth is going on down there?” she hissed, rushing out of the bedroom and slamming the door behind her.
As soon as her footsteps faded down the stairs, I slipped out of the bathroom, hurried across the bedroom, and slipped out into the hallway, rushing down the back service stairs to safety.
Downstairs in the grand foyer, absolute chaos had erupted.
Nathan stood near the base of the staircase looking visibly unsteady, leaning heavily against a marble pillar. Several high-ranking corporate executives and family friends—whom Nathan had secretly invited over under the guise of an impromptu pre-wedding toast—stood gathered in the foyer, watching in stunned silence.
And standing right in the center of the room was a team of federal marshals accompanied by local police detectives.
Vanessa pushed her way through the crowd, her face flushed with anger and panic. “Nathan! What is the meaning of this? Why are police officers in our home?”
Nathan slowly straightened up, the frail, staggering posture completely vanishing in an instant. The dull, glazed look in his eyes was replaced by a sharp, piercing intelligence. He stood tall, towering over her with absolute, unyielding authority.
“The game is over, Vanessa,” Nathan said, his voice ringing loud and clear through the cavernous foyer without a trace of hesitation or hearing difficulty.
Vanessa stared at him, her color draining entirely. “What... what are you talking about?”
Step by step, Nathan walked down the grand staircase toward her, pulling a thick manila folder from his jacket.
“For over a year, you systematically administered a synthetic neurotoxin to slowly destroy my auditory nerve, hoping to render me legally incapacitated before our wedding,” Nathan stated, each word falling like a lead weight. “You forged my signature on fraudulent trust amendments and life-insurance policies designed to strip my company of four hundred million dollars the moment I said 'I do.'”
“That’s insane! He’s delusional, he’s losing his mind!” Vanessa shrieked, turning frantically toward the assembled guests and police officers. “Look at him! The stress of the wedding has caused a complete mental breakdown!”
“I’m perfectly sane, Vanessa,” Nathan replied coldly. He turned his gaze toward the lead detective. “Detective, if you search the master guest suite upstairs—specifically beneath the floorboards of the walk-in closet—you will find three vials of synthetic neurotoxin, a burner phone, and a handwritten ledger detailing her entire financial conspiracy.”
Vanessa lunged forward like a cornered animal, her mask of composure entirely shattered. “You're lying! You can't prove a damn thing!”
Detective Vance stepped forward, holding up a transparent evidence bag containing the very items I had just photographed minutes earlier, which one of Nathan’s security sweeps had officially seized moments after my escape.
“Vanessa Vale, you are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate fraud, and forgery,” the detective declared, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
As Vanessa was dragged screaming and thrashing toward the front doors, her expensive designer dress rustling wildly against the marble floor, the entire foyer fell into a stunned, profound silence.

Nathan exhaled a long, shuddering breath, the immense weight of the past year finally lifting from his shoulders.
He turned his eyes away from the retreating police cruisers and found me standing quietly near the service hallway, holding Sophia tightly in my arms.
