Chapter 5 - UnshackledThe heavy steel chain around my ankle rattled as the maintenance worker, supervised directly by Detective Vance, used a master key to unlock the heavy padlock.

With a satisfying click, the cold iron fell away from my skin.

I let out a long, shuddering breath, pulling my legs up onto the bed and wrapping my arms around my knees. The pain in my ankle throbbed fiercely, but the weight lifting off my soul was immeasurable.

Dad rushed to the side of the bed, dropping the garment bag containing the hideous white wedding dress onto the floor without a second thought. He grabbed my hands, tears welling up in his eyes. ☕

“Elena... my God, sweetheart, I am so sorry,” Dad choked out, his voice breaking as he stroked my hair. “I was blind. Julian told me you were having a nervous breakdown, that you wanted the wedding rushed... I didn't know. I swear to God, I had no idea what kind of monster I invited into our lives.”

“I know, Dad,” I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder. “It’s okay. You’re here now.”

Nurse Valerie stood nearby, neatly organizing her paperwork back into the manila folder. She looked up and gave me a warm, reassuring smile.

“Your vital signs are stable, Mrs. Miller—or whatever you choose to legally go by after today,” Valerie said with a wink. “The OBGYN specialist is on her way up to do a complete, independent evaluation of you and the baby, free from any outside interference.”

“Thank you,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “Valerie... how did you know? When he gave that fake story, how did you catch him so fast?”

Valerie smiled softly. “Mr. Miller made two fatal mistakes. First, he claimed you signed the consent form on Tuesday night in your kitchen. But the digital timestamp on our electronic intake system proves that form was generated and digitally pre-approved by his IP address forty-eight hours before you even walked through our doors. Second—and most importantly—a man who truly loves and protects his wife doesn't bring an audience of co-conspirators to validate a medical decision. He brings his own heart.”

Dad squeezed my hand tighter, his jaw set in a hard, protective line. “Those bastards are going to lose everything. I’m calling our corporate legal team right now. Every contract, every property deed, every cent they tried to steal is going back into your name before the sun sets today.”
