Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next morning, the sun broke through the Connecticut mist, bathing the manicured gardens in a deceptive, golden calm. But inside the Moretti estate, the atmosphere was charged like a live wire.

At 9:00 a.m. sharp, a black town car rolled up the private drive. Two men in dark suits stepped out, followed closely by Arthur Vance—a tall, silver-haired corporate lawyer whose bespoke Italian suit and aristocratic smirk usually commanded any room he entered.

He strode into the grand foyer as if he still owned the place, casually tossing his trench coat onto the marble banister.

“Vincent!” Arthur called out smoothly, flashing a bright, confident smile. “I received an urgent, rather hysterical message from your security team about some dramatic medical conspiracy. Really, cousin, firing Harrison Blake in the middle of a delicate pediatric case? Have you completely lost your mind?”

Vincent stepped out of his second-floor study, walking slowly down the sweeping staircase. He didn't look like an exhausted, grieving father anymore. He looked like the ruthless billionaire investor who crushed corporate competitors before breakfast.

“Arthur,” Vincent said, his voice echoing coldly through the cavernous foyer. “I see you made good time from Manhattan.”

“Of course I did. Someone has to look out for the family interests while you’re busy entertaining unverified nannies with wild conspiracy theories,” Arthur replied, sneering as he looked up at me standing on the landing above. “Really, Claire, isn’t it past your bedtime or time to change diapers? Leave corporate matters to adults.”

I didn't flinch. I simply walked down the stairs, holding a slim, silver tablet displaying the mirrored server logs and financial wire transfer receipts we had decrypted the night before.

“You might want to review the data stream before you insult the nanny, Arthur,” I said calmly, stopping two steps above him.

Arthur’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second, though he quickly recovered, smoothing his lapels. “I don’t deal with hired help.”

“Then deal with me,” Vincent interrupted, reaching the bottom of the stairs and stepping directly into Arthur’s personal space. Vincent pulled the encrypted flash drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the glass entryway table. “That drive contains four years of automated atmospheric logs from Lucas and Leo’s bedrooms, paired with monthly wire transfers from your personal Swiss holding account to Dr. Harrison Blake.”

Arthur’s face drained of color. The aristocratic charm evaporated, leaving behind the panicked look of a cornered rat.

“That’s... that’s fabricated nonsense,” Arthur stammered, taking a step back toward the open front doors. “You can’t prove—”

“Federal marshals are currently executing a search warrant at your Manhattan penthouse and your firm’s offices as we speak,” Vincent interrupted quietly. “And by the time you finish reading your Miranda rights, my legal team will have stripped you of every share, asset, and voting right you hold in Moretti Holdings.”

Panic flared in Arthur’s eyes. He lunged backward toward the door, but two federal agents—who had been waiting quietly outside in unmarked vehicles—stepped through the open doorway, blocking his exit.

“Arthur Vance?” the lead agent asked, flashing a gold badge. “You’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, administration of illicit neurotoxins, and attempted aggravated endangerment of minors.”

As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place around Arthur’s wrists, he shot one venomous glare up at me before being dragged out into the morning sunlight.

I let out a long, slow breath I didn't realize I’d been holding.
