Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Rearview MirrorBy the end of the week, the corporate execution was complete.

Kingsley Technologies was restructured under an emergency receiverhip, with its core assets legally absorbed into a joint venture managed by Moretti Global and Dr. Claire Hastings. Grant was ousted with a severance package that barely covered his legal fees, disgraced, broken, and exiled from the high-society circles he had worked so hard to conquer.
Sienna Vale had vanished entirely, fleeing back to her hometown in the Midwest after realizing her billionaire savior had nothing left to offer.
On a crisp, golden Friday afternoon, I stood on the private balcony of Dominic’s penthouse, watching the sun dip below the jagged skyline of San Francisco. The air smelled of salt, eucalyptus, and the crisp promise of autumn.
Inside the nursery, Maya was sleeping soundly in her crib, her tiny chest rising and falling in sweet, untroubled peace.
Soft footsteps approached from behind, and a pair of warm, strong arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me gently back against a solid, comforting chest. Dominic rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.
“You’ve been awfully quiet all afternoon,” Dominic murmured, his voice a low, soothing rumble against my ear. “Are you thinking about the boardroom?”
I leaned back into his embrace, closing my eyes and smiling. “No. I haven't thought about Grant once today.”
“Good,” Dominic kissed my neck softly. “Because he’s officially old news. His assets have been liquidated, his name has been scrubbed from the commercial registries, and according to my security chief, he left the state yesterday for a cheap condo in Florida.”
I turned around in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck, looking up into his dark, steady eyes. “You really went all out, didn't you?”
“I told you months ago,” Dominic said, his gaze turning fierce and absolute. “Nobody touches what’s mine. And nobody ever makes you feel small again.”
“You know,” I whispered, a playful spark dancing in my eyes, “you never actually asked me.”
Dominic raised an eyebrow, a slow, teasing smile playing at the corners of his mouth. “Asked you what?”
“To marry you. You just kind of assumed appointment as permanent co-CEO of this family.”
Dominic’s expression softened, all the dangerous, hard edges of the ruthless syndicate leader melting away into something profoundly tender. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small velvet box that looked like it had been burning a hole in his lining for weeks.
He flipped it open.
Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring—a flawless canary diamond flanked by two delicate sapphires, sparkling brilliantly in the fading golden light of the San Francisco sunset.
“I didn't need to ask,” Dominic murmured, sliding the ring smoothly onto my finger. “Because I knew the moment you walked through my door that you were already home. But just to make the corporate paperwork official... Dr. Claire Hastings, will you do me the honor of letting me spend the rest of my life protecting you and our daughter?”
May you like
Tears stung my eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of pain or survival. They were tears of absolute, unadulterated peace.
“Yes,” I whispered, pulling him down into a deep, desperate kiss. “Yes, a million times yes.”
