Chapter 5 - Unraveling the ConspiracyThe incident with Arthur Sterling wasn't just a drunken advance; it was the spark that ignited a corporate war.

Two days after the gala, Ethan called me into his private home office—a sprawling room lined with leather-bound books, antique globes floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate gardens. He stood by his mahogany desk, reviewing a series of encrypted financial ledgers alongside his lead corporate attorney, Marcus Vance.
"Sterling didn't just insult you out of arrogance," Ethan explained, motioning for me to sit in a velvet armchair across from his desk. "He was testing my defenses. My investigators have been digging into Sterling Global Logistics for weeks. It turns out your ex-boyfriend Ryan wasn't just a low-level coordinator making bad life choices."
My heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?"
Marcus Vance slid a thick manila folder across the desk. Inside were bank statements, wire transfers, and internal audit reports linking Ryan’s logistics division directly to a systematic kickback scheme orchestrated by Sterling Global.
"Ryan was leaking proprietary shipping routes and client data to Sterling's subsidiary shell companies," Marcus explained smoothly. "In exchange, Sterling’s associates were padding Ryan’s personal accounts with under-the-table cash bonuses—money Ryan used to gamble, drink, and terrorize you while pretending he earned every penny."
The pieces fell into place with sickening clarity. All those late nights Ryan claimed he was "working overtime at the warehouse," all those mysterious cash withdrawals, his sudden mood swings whenever I asked about our finances—it was all connected to corporate espionage.
"He used me as a punching bag while selling your company's secrets," I whispered, the weight of the betrayal washing over me.
"He did," Ethan agreed, walking over and resting his hand on the back of my chair, a silent anchor of strength. "And now, Sterling is panicking because federal prosecutors are expanding the investigation from simple wire fraud to a full-scale RICO indictment against Sterling Global."
"Is Sterling going to retaliate?" I asked, looking up into Ethan's steady, dark eyes.
"Let him try," Ethan replied with a cold, confident smirk. "We have him cornered. But that also means you are no longer safe just hiding on the estate grounds. Sterling is desperate, and desperate men make reckless mistakes."

"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying," Ethan said quietly, leaning down so his face was close to mine, "until this trial concludes, you move into the main house. My personal detail will guard every door. You are not leaving my sight."
