Chapter 3 - Family Business and Hidden FangsThe temperature in the magnificent third-floor study seemed to drop ten degrees the second Julian Caldwell stormed across the Persian rug.

Julian was the golden boy of the family’s public relations campaigns—charismatic, ambitious, and notoriously ruthless when it came to corporate restructuring. But beneath his polished veneer and designer ties, everyone in the mansion whispered about his volatile temper and his habit of protecting his own cronies, no matter what rules they broke.
"Julian," Ethan said, his voice remaining terrifyingly calm. He didn't stand up. He simply set his coffee cup down on the saucer with a soft clink. "You're trespassing in my private study without an appointment."
"Don't give me that corporate-speak bullshit, Ethan!" Julian snapped, stopping just feet from the mahogany desk. He spared me a fleeting, venomous glance before turning his full fury back onto his cousin. "I hired Ryan Scott through my personal private-security contractor. He's a loyal guy, he keeps the staff in line, and he gets results! And you—what, you suspended him over a kitchen dispute with a cleaning girl?"
"He didn't suspend him, Mr. Caldwell," Sarah Lin interjected smoothly, not even looking up from her tablet. "Mr. Caldwell had him arrested for felony aggravated assault, trespassing, and attempted battery. Furthermore, our legal department is currently auditing all contracting firms brought in under your division over the past two years."
Julian’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. He slammed his palm down onto the edge of the desk, leaning over toward Ethan.
"You're dismantling my division over a maid?!" Julian hissed, his voice trembling with rage. "Have you lost your damn mind, Ethan? The board is already questioning your recent acquisitions in the logistics sector. If they find out you're turning our residential staff quarters into a social justice sanctuary for crying domestics, they'll call an emergency vote of no confidence!"
I shrank back into my chair, wishing the Persian rug could swallow me whole. I was the poison seed causing a family war inside the most powerful dynasty in Chicago.
Ethan slowly stood up.
He towered over Julian by at least three inches, possessing a quiet, athletic menace that made Julian’s bluster look like a schoolboy throwing a tantrum. Ethan didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He simply stepped around the desk until he was standing face-to-face with his cousin.
"Let's get a few things straight, Julian," Ethan said, each word deliberate and glacial. "First, the board answers to me, not the other way around. Second, the 'crying domestic' you're referring to is an employee of this estate who was assaulted on my property by a violent criminal you personally vouched for and failed to vet."
Julian swallowed hard, though he tried to maintain his defiant scowl. "He made a mistake—"
"He committed a felony," Ethan interrupted coldly. "And third... if you ever speak about Miss Carter with that tone of disrespect under my roof again, I won't just audit your division. I will strip you of your executive title, liquidate your company shares, and ensure you never work in this city again."
The silence in the room was absolute.
Julian stared at Ethan, the color draining entirely from his face as he realized his cousin wasn't bluffing. Ethan Caldwell didn't make empty threats; he executed them with ruthless precision.
Without another word, Julian spun on his heel, shot me one last look filled with pure, unadulterated venom, and stormed out of the study, slamming the heavy mahogany doors behind him so hard the crystal chandelier overhead rattled.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
I sat trembling in my chair, clutching the cold coffee cup, tears blurring my vision once more.
"I'm sorry," I whispered, my voice breaking. "I've... I've brought nothing but trouble into your home. If I should leave—if I should pack my things and quit right now—"
"You are going nowhere, Ivy," Ethan interrupted, turning his gaze back to me. The harsh, lethal glare he had worn for Julian instantly melted away, replaced by something warm, steady, and terrifyingly protective.
"Mr. Caldwell, your cousin is right," I pleaded softly. "People like them... people like the Caldwells... they don't mix with people like me. I'm just a target."
Ethan walked slowly around the desk, stopping right beside my chair. He reached down, gently taking the empty coffee cup from my shaking hands and setting it on the side table. Then, with infinite care, he placed his warm hand over my trembling fingers.
"Let me be the judge of who belongs in my life, Ivy," he murmured quietly. "Julian thinks I'm losing my grip. He thinks protecting someone vulnerable is a weakness."

Ethan’s dark eyes locked onto mine, burning with a quiet intensity that stole the breath right out of my lungs.
"He's about to find out just how dangerous a man becomes when he decides to protect what's his."
