Chapter 5 - Welcome to MexicoThe Boeing 737 touched down smoothly on Runway 12 at Cancun International Airport, the thrust reversers roaring as the aircraft slowed down to a gentle taxi toward Gate 4.

The moment the seatbelt sign turned off, Ryan leaped out of his seat and grabbed his overhead bag, frantically tapping his phone screen as the cellular network finally reconnected.

Immediately, his phone went wild.

Notifications poured in like a tidal wave.

Chimes, buzzes, and ringing tones erupted from his device in a chaotic rhythm.

42 Missed Calls from Arthur Pendelton (CEO).

18 Missed Calls from Legal Counsel.

12 Email Alerts from Corporate Security.

1 Bank Notice: Accounts Frozen Pending Judicial Review.

Ryan’s face went completely deathly white. He stumbled backward against seat 2A, dropping his phone onto the carpet. The lawyer sitting in 2A picked it up, glanced at the glowing screen showing ARTHUR PENDELTON - CEO, and handed it back to Ryan with a cold, mocking smirk.

"Looks like your office is trying to reach you, Carter," the lawyer remarked casually. "Better take it. Sounds urgent."

The cabin door opened, letting in the warm, humid tropical air of Cancun.

Ashley didn't wait for Ryan. The moment the main door cleared, she grabbed her small rollaway bag, pushed past Ryan without looking at him once, and ran straight into the jetbridge toward Maria, the ground agent I had contacted.

"Ashley! Wait!" Ryan yelled, trying to push through the exiting passengers.

"Mr. Carter," I said, stepping directly into his path at the aircraft exit, my posture erect, my navy uniform immaculate. "Please step to the side. Ground authorities require a word with you before you clear Mexican customs."

Ryan stopped, staring at me in sheer terror. "What? Ground authorities? What did you do?!"

Standing at the end of the jetbridge were two uniformed officers from the Mexican Federal Police, accompanied by an official from the U.S. Consulate's Fraud Division.

"Mr. Ryan Carter?" the U.S. Consulate officer called out, holding an official tablet. "We have an emergency federal travel hold issued by the Northern District of Texas regarding interstate financial fraud and corporate asset flight. Please step out of the jetbridge and accompany us to the administrative office."

Ryan looked behind him at the aircraft galley, then back at the federal officers standing in the warm Mexican sunlight. There was nowhere to run. No corporate card to buy his way out. No lies left to tell.

He looked at me, his eyes filled with a pitiful, pathetic desperation.

"Valerie... please," he sobbed quietly, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "Don't do this to me. I love you. I've always loved you. We can start over! We can sell the house, pay the money back, and live simply... like we used to!"

I looked at the man I had spent nine years loving—a man who had kissed my cheek that morning while planning to take another woman to paradise on stolen money.

"You never loved me, Ryan," I said, my voice clear and ringing with absolute freedom. "You loved having a quiet, reliable wife who kept your home while you played king. But this flight has reached its final destination."

The federal officers stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Ryan’s arm and guiding him down the jetbridge toward the airport terminal.
