Chapter 7 - The Empire We BuiltSix months later.

The spring sun over Chicago was warm, bright, and unbroken by a single cloud.

The Hayes estate looked entirely different. The heavy steel shutters were gone, replaced by open-air French doors that let the fresh breeze sweep through the grand corridors. The guards were still there, discreet and professional, but the atmosphere of a prison had vanished, replaced by the warmth of a real home.

I sat at the massive dining table—not twenty seats away from him at the far end, but right beside him, sharing coffee, fresh pastries, and the morning newspaper together.

Declan lowered the Chicago Tribune, reaching across the table to take my hand, his thumb gently tracing the wedding ring he had placed on my finger two years ago, but which we had only truly begun wearing six months ago.

“The new shipping terminal on the South Docks opens today,” Declan said softly, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. “The board wants you there for the ribbon-cutting. As co-owner.”

I smiled back, taking a sip of my coffee.

“Only if Colin Mercer isn't invited,” I teased lightly.

Declan let out a low, rumbling laugh—a sound that still made my heart skip a beat every time I heard it.

“Mercer sent a wedding gift last week,” Declan muttered, shaking his head. “A very expensive bottle of scotch with a note that said: ‘To the only woman in Chicago who can tame a monster without drawing a gun.’”

“And what did you do with it?”

“I drank it,” Declan smirked, pulling me closer against his shoulder as we looked out the glass doors toward the manicured gardens where the city skyline rose in the distance. “After all... he’s not entirely wrong.”

The empire we lived in was still dangerous, built on concrete, steel, and the shadow of the underworld. But the war was over. The silence was broken.

And as Declan kissed the top of my head in the warm morning sunlight, I knew that no matter what storms rolled across Chicago, I would never be invisible again.
