Chapter 4 - The South Beach FreezeThe penthouse suite at the Loews Hotel in South Beach boasted floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the glittering Atlantic Ocean, a private infinity pool on the wrap-around balcony, and a marble wet bar stocked with vintage champagne. It was the epitome of luxury—a playground for the wealthy, the entitled, and the reckless.

My mother, Eleanor Morgan, lounged on a white leather chaise lounge in an oversized silk designer bathrobe, sunglasses perched on her nose despite the indoor air conditioning, lazily flicking through a glossy fashion magazine. Across the suite, my sister Chloe was standing by the mirror, admiring her newly applied spray tan while sipping a mimosa.

“Mark is taking forever down in New York,” Chloe complained, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. “He was supposed to text us the moment the brownstone insurance fire made the local morning news broadcast so we could call our insurance broker and set up our grieving widow narrative.”

Eleanor lowered her magazine, a smug, cruel smile curling her thin lips. “Patience, Chloe. Mark knows what he’s doing. Once that drafty old brownstone goes up in smoke, David will be entirely dependent on us. We’ll control his corporate trust, we’ll dictate his life, and that pathetic immigrant wife of his will be out of the picture for good. She never belonged in our family anyway.”

“Right?” Chloe laughed, clinking her champagne glass against the coffee table. “Honestly, mom, we deserve this vacation. Fourteen grand didn't even cover our first-class tickets and this penthouse suite, but once the insurance payout clears, we’ll be set for life.”

Just as Eleanor reached for her diamond-encrusted Rolex on the bedside table to check the time, a sharp, frantic hammering echoed against the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Eleanor frowned, adjusting her sunglasses. “Housekeeping must be early. Tell them to come back later, Chloe.”

Chloe rolled her eyes and sauntered over to the entryway, swinging the heavy wooden door wide open, ready to snap at the hotel staff.

Instead of a maid with fresh towels, three towering, broad-shouldered men in tailored federal dark suits and tactical vests stood in the hallway. Their faces were carved from granite, and pinned to their lapels were silver federal badges.

Chloe froze, the mimosa glass slipping from her fingers and shattering into a million sparkling shards across the marble entryway. “W-What is this? You have the wrong room! We’re guests here—”

“Eleanor Morgan?” the lead federal agent demanded, his voice cutting through the suite like a razor blade as he shoved past Chloe without breaking stride.

Eleanor bolted upright from her chaise lounge, her face draining of all color. “I—I am Eleanor Morgan! What is the meaning of this outrage? Do you know who my son is? Do you know how much influence—?”

“Your son’s corporate accounts have placed an emergency federal freeze on all your assets under interstate fraud and racketeering statutes,” the agent interrupted coldly, pulling a thick stack of court documents from his leather folder and tossing them directly onto the white leather chaise lounge. “Furthermore, you are both formally implicated in a multi-state conspiracy involving aggravated neglect, extortion, insurance fraud, and premeditated arson.”

Eleanor’s jaw dropped so low she looked like a broken doll. “Arson? Fraud?! That’s absurd! We were in Miami! We were celebrating the holidays!”

“Yes, ma'am. And your accomplice, Mark Vance, is currently cooperating fully with federal prosecutors down in a Brooklyn precinct after being caught red-handed pouring gasoline in your son’s basement storage vault while your daughter-in-law and newborn grandson were freezing upstairs,” the agent stated flatly, stepping forward and pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

Chloe let out a piercing, hysterical shriek, collapsing onto the shattered glass in the hallway, sobbing incoherently as the cold reality crashed down around her.

Eleanor stared at the handcuffs in horror, her manicured hands trembling violently. “No... no, David wouldn't do this! I’m his mother! He owes me everything!”

“Turn around and put your hands behind your back, Mrs. Morgan,” the agent commanded, his tone admitting zero argument.

As the cold steel clicked shut around my mother’s wrists, the illusion of her untouchable, cruel matriarchal empire shattered into dust. They had wanted to freeze Maya and my newborn son to death in a dark, unheated Brooklyn apartment.

Now, they were the ones staring down the barrel of an endless, freezing winter behind iron bars.
