Chapter 3 - The Fracture Beneath the SurfaceThe raw, unfiltered fury in Niko’s voice caught me completely off guard. For a man who had sworn up and down on our wedding night that our marriage was nothing more than a convenient business transaction, his current grip felt dangerously close to panic.

"Let go of me, Niko," I commanded, pressing my palms flat against his chest, feeling the solid, heavy beat of his heart beneath his silk shirt. "I'm not one of your subordinates you can interrogate."
Instead of releasing me, his grip tightened. His dark eyes swept over my face as if searching for physical injuries, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched near his temple.
"You are my wife," he growled, the words tasting like iron on his tongue. "In this city, wearing my ring means your life is tied directly to mine. If someone approached you today, I need to know who."
"A man," I said, finally letting the defiance crack to reveal the chilling reality. "He stopped me outside the campus gates. He told me to give you a message."
Niko went completely still. The ambient hum of the penthouse climate control seemed to vanish, leaving only the heavy, oppressive weight of our breathing.
"What message?" he asked, his voice dropping into a register so cold and low it made my blood run ice-cold.
"He said the Marcone family sends their regards," I whispered, watching his face closely. "And that... weddings are lovely, but funerals leave a more lasting impression."
The silence that followed was deafening.
For a terrifying split second, I thought Niko was going to shatter something—or someone. The dark aura radiating from him shifted from simmering irritation to pure, concentrated lethal intent. His eyes flashed with a dangerous, violent fire, his nostrils flaring as he processed the name of his mortal enemies stepping onto my campus.
Slowly, deliberately, Niko’s hands slid down from my shoulders, his fingers brushing lingeringly against my arms before he stepped back, turning away from me to run a hand roughly through his dark hair.
"Did they touch you?" he asked, his back still turned, his voice strained.
"No," I replied quietly. "Your bodyguards were too busy looking at traffic to notice, but the man didn't touch me. He just delivered his little warning and vanished into the subway."
Niko exhaled a long, ragged breath, his shoulders dropping slightly before he spun back around to face me. The mask of absolute control was back in place, but the jagged edges of his fury still lingered in the air.
"Pack a bag," he said suddenly.
I blinked, thrown completely off balance. "What? Pack a bag for where?"
"Not a question, Aurelia. An order," Niko said sharply, stepping past me toward the master bedroom. "If the Marcones know your schedule, this penthouse is no longer secure enough for you. We’re moving to the estate in upstate New York tonight."
"Wait—stop right there!" I chased after him into the bedroom, my temper finally boiling over. "I have constitutional law midterms on Wednesday! I have papers to submit, a life, a university! I am not packing up and fleeing to some mob compound in the woods just because some thug whispered in my ear!"
Niko stopped dead in his tracks beside the king-sized bed and turned around slowly, towering over me with an expression of cold, unyielding granite.
"You think this is a game?" he asked, his voice dangerously quiet. "You think because your father shielded you from the reality of his political debts that you can stroll through Manhattan like an ordinary college student? Vincent Marcone doesn't care about your midterms, Aurelia. He cares about breaking me. And the easiest way to break a man in my position is to take the person closest to him."
I opened my mouth to fire back another sarcastic retort, but the words died in my throat.
The person closest to him.
Did he actually believe I was close to him? After three days of cold glares, strict rules, and separate bedrooms?
"I am not close to you," I said, my voice suddenly dropping to a fragile whisper. "We met at the altar four days ago. You look at me with contempt every single time you enter a room. You think I'm a spoiled, reckless brat who spends her nights partying. Why do you care if the Marcones use me to get to you?"
Niko froze.
For a fraction of a second, the impenetrable wall around his eyes fractured. A complex mixture of guilt, anger, and something unreadable flashed across his aristocratic features. He looked down at me, his chest rising and falling heavily beneath his shirt.

"I care because my name is on your finger," he said harshly, the harshness sounding more like self-defense than cruelty. "And no one destroys what belongs to a Santoro. Now pack your bag. We leave in twenty minutes."
He turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving me standing alone in the center of the bedroom, my hands trembling with a strange, confusing cocktail of fury and a terrifying, fluttering warmth in my chest.
