Chapter 7 - The Open RoadSix months later, the New England autumn had transformed the landscape into a breathtaking tapestry of amber, gold, and crimson.

I stood on the wraparound wooden porch of my grandfather’s seaside cottage in Newport, holding a steaming mug of black coffee as the salty morning breeze washed over my face. The legal battle had finally concluded with a comprehensive settlement: the Newport cottage was restored fully to my sole ownership, the primary suburban home was sold with the proceeds split cleanly in my favor, and Caleb’s financial web had been systematically dismantled by federal prosecutors, leaving him facing probation, community service, and permanent financial ruin.
He had tried to reach out through third parties twice, begging for mediation, but Maya had shut down every attempt with ruthless legal efficiency.
My phone buzzed on the rustic wooden patio table beside me. I glanced down. It wasn't a lawyer, nor was it a debt collector or an automated notification.
It was a text from Maya: Ferry leaves in twenty minutes. Don't be late for our celebratory lobster dinner.
I smiled, taking one final sip of my coffee, and looked out over the crashing waves of the Atlantic. The water sparkled brilliantly under the morning sun, vast, deep, and completely unburdened by the past.

Life wasn't about sitting beside the same person when life got cold, as my mother had once poetically warned. True life was knowing when to stand up, walk away from the frost, and build your own fire in the sun.
I grabbed my keys, stepped off the porch, and drove down the coastal highway toward a future that belonged entirely to me.
