Chapter 4 - The Silent WarSaint Jude’s University Hospital felt like a fortress.

The entire seventh floor had been placed under federal guard. Four armed marshals stood outside the double doors of the Intensive Care Unit, while specialized toxicologists worked around the clock to flush the remaining traces of tetrodotoxin from Clara’s bloodstream.
I sat on a hard vinyl chair beside her bed, refusing to sleep, refusing to leave her side for even a minute. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the sweetest sound I had ever heard in my life.
On the third night, the room was quiet save for the hum of the IV pumps. The rain beat softly against the window glass overlooking the city skyline.
A soft groan came from the bed.
I snapped awake instantly, leaning over the guardrail. "Clara?"
Her dark eyelashes fluttered slowly. Her eyes—usually so bright and warm—looked hazy and confused as she looked around the sterile white room. Her gaze slowly focused on my face.
"Dan...iel?" her voice was a rough, dry rasp beneath the plastic oxygen cannula.
"I'm here, baby," I whispered, tears instantly spilling down my cheeks as I caught her hand and pressed it against my face. "I'm right here."
She swallowed hard, her brows furrowing in pain. "The... the tea..."
"Don't try to talk too much," I begged softly, kissing her knuckles. "You're in the hospital. You're safe."
"My mother..." Clara’s voice trembled, a tear slipping from the corner of her eye. "She came to the house... she made me herbal tea... she said... she said it would help with the pregnancy swelling..."
My heart tightened into a hard, painful knot. Helena hadn't just hired a doctor to sign a fake death certificate; she had personally walked into our home, smiled at her pregnant daughter, and handed her a cup of poison.
"I heard them, Daniel," Clara sobbed quietly, her chest heaving as tears rained down her cheeks. "I couldn't move... I couldn't open my eyes... but I heard them talking in the clinic... Marcus said... said to make sure the box was nailed shut..."
The psychological horror of what she had endured hit me like a physical blow. She had been trapped inside her own paralyzed body, listening to her own family plan her murder.
"They're gone, Clara," I said, leaning down to press my forehead against hers, holding her close. "They are in federal custody. Marcus, your mother, Crane... none of them will ever touch you or our child again. I promise you on my life."
Clara’s hand moved slowly down her body, resting over her rounded stomach. She looked up at me, panic flaring in her eyes. "The baby... Daniel, the baby—"
"Our baby is fine," I said quickly, offering her a brilliant, tearful smile. "She's strong, Clara. Just like her mother. The doctors ran three ultrasounds. Her heart rate is perfect."
Clara let out a long, shaky sigh of relief, sagging back against the pillows. She closed her eyes, holding my hand against her cheek with all the strength she had left.

"Thank you for opening the box," she whispered softly.
"I'll open every door in the world for you, Clara," I swore quietly into the silence of the room. "Always."
