Chapter 4 - The Vengeance of the RejectedWhile Anthony and I shared tea in the quiet sanctuary of his penthouse, a storm was brewing back in the restaurant world.

Arthur Vance, the owner of the upscale restaurant where I worked, was accustomed to controlling every narrative, every employee, and every dollar that entered his establishment. The humiliation of having his manager dragged out by Anthony Romano’s security detail had battered his fragile ego beyond recognition.
Worse still, his high-society contacts were whispering. Rumors were circulating that the restaurant was losing its lease, that health inspectors were suddenly scheduled for surprise audits, and that the city’s most influential dining spot was falling out of favor with its primary investor pool.
Vance sat in his private office late Tuesday night, swirling a glass of expensive bourbon, staring at a folder containing my employee file.
"She thinks she's untouchable now," Vance muttered to himself, his face twisted in malice. "Some low-class diner brat sleeping her way into underworld protection. Let's see how untouchable she is when her precious brother’s medical funding mysteriously evaporates."
He picked up his desk phone and dialed a private number—a corrupt mid-level administrator at the city’s health and human services bureau whom Vance had kept in his pocket for years.
"Mark? It's Arthur," Vance purred smoothly into the receiver. "I need a favor regarding a minor dependent named Leo Marino. There's a pending state-subsidized speech therapy grant associated with his file... yes, I want it flagged, delayed, and ideally rerouted. Let's make things a little difficult for our dear little Emily."
Vance hung up the phone with a smug, self-satisfied grin, convinced he had struck a crippling blow against the waitress who had dared to humiliate him.
He had no idea what kind of fire he had just walked into.
The next morning, at the Chicago Otology Institute, Dr. Vance’s office performed a comprehensive series of advanced evaluations on Leo.
I sat beside my brother in the quiet consultation room, holding his hand as Dr. Richard Vance—a distinguished, silver-haired specialist with kind eyes—reviewed the digital scan results on his wall monitor.
"Well, Emily," Dr. Vance said, smiling warmly at both of us. "The preliminary tests confirm what we hoped. Leo is an exceptional candidate for a bilateral cochlear implant procedure combined with nerve stimulation therapy. The auditory nerve fibers are intact and responsive."
Leo’s eyes widened behind his glasses, a breathless gasp escaping his lips. He looked at me, signing frantically: Does this mean... I can actually hear again?
I translated the doctor's words with tears streaming down my face. "Yes, Leo. It means there is a very real chance you'll hear my voice again."
The joy in the room was palpable, a radiant beam of light breaking through years of heavy shadows.
Then my phone buzzed in my coat pocket.
I pulled it out to check the screen. It was an email notification from the state health services portal, followed by a sharp text message from the clinic billing coordinator.
Urgent: The pending foundational clearance and state-matched insurance authorization for the procedure has been flagged and suspended due to an administrative hold initiated by the municipal compliance office.
My heart plummeted into my stomach.
I excused myself for a moment, stepping out into the quiet hallway, and dialed the direct number for Anthony’s private security coordinator, Viktor.
He answered on the second ring. "Miss Emily. Is there an issue?"
"Viktor, something just happened," I said, my voice shaking with sudden panic. "The hospital billing office says Leo's procedural clearance was just suspended by a municipal hold. The administrator who flagged it... his name is Mark Rinaldi. He works directly with Arthur Vance."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line—just long enough for Viktor to process the names.
When Viktor spoke again, his voice was chillingly calm. "Stay at the clinic with your brother, Miss Emily. Mr. Romano has been informed. The matter is being handled."
