Chapter 6 - The New BalanceThree weeks later.

The high-rise boardroom on the 45th floor of the Willis Tower offered a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline, stretching out to the blue expanse of Lake Michigan.

A meeting was in progress.

Sitting around the polished dark granite table were six of the most powerful men in Chicago—legitimate real estate barons, private equity directors, and city commissioners who secretly managed the legal fronts for the Romano empire.

At the head of the table sat Matteo Romano, impeccably tailored in a navy Italian suit, listening quietly.

At his right hand sat me.

I wore a sharp charcoal pantsuit, my dark hair styled in an elegant chignon, a sleek leather tablet resting before me.

"The port expansion project in South Chicago is projected to yield a twelve percent return over four years," a senior commissioner was saying, pointing to a slide presentation on the wall. "It's a solid, low-risk investment for the Romano foundation."

"Incorrect," I spoke up calmly.

The commissioner stopped mid-sentence, looking offended. "Excuse me?"

I didn't look at him; I simply swiped a finger across my tablet, casting a new financial model onto the giant display screen on the wall.

"You failed to factor in the secondary union negotiations scheduled for September," I said smoothly. "Furthermore, your contractor is sourcing steel from an offshore supplier currently under federal anti-dumping investigation. The true risk of project delay is sixty-eight percent, and the net return is negative two point four percent."

The room was dead quiet. The commissioner turned red, looking to Matteo for support.

"Don Romano... surely you aren't letting an analyst dictate policy on a fifty-million-dollar infrastructure deal?"

Matteo didn't even look at the commissioner. He picked up his crystal glass of water, took a slow sip, and leaned back in his leather chair.

"Miss Gallagher’s word on risk assessment is final," Matteo said, his voice quiet, cold, and carrying absolute authority. "If she says the project fails, the project is canceled. Next item."

The commissioner swallowed hard, frantically shuffling his papers. "Y-yes, Don Romano. Of course."

After the meeting adjourned and the panicked executives cleared out of the room, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the city.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me.

Matteo stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me back against his chest. I relaxed into his warmth, resting my head against his shoulder.

"You terrified him," Matteo murmured into my hair, a quiet amusement in his voice.

"He was using an outdated regression model," I replied, a small smile touching my lips. "He deserved to be terrified."

Matteo chuckled, his hands sliding up to frame my waist. "Chloe called from London this morning. She successfully closed the acquisition of the shipping firm in Liverpool. She managed it without a single arrest."

"Statistical miracles do happen occasionally," I admitted.

Matteo turned me around in his arms so I was facing him. His hazel eyes were bright, filled with a deep, fierce affection that made my breath catch in my throat.

"You’ve restructured my entire organization in twenty-one days, Sophie," he whispered, his thumbs gently caressing my cheekbones. "My profit margins are up thirty percent, my security is impenetrable, and my enemies don't even know where to strike."

"That was the agreement," I said softly, my hands resting against the lapels of his suit. "I eliminate variables."

"There is still one variable I haven't accounted for," Matteo said, reaching into his pocket.

He pulled out a small, velvet-lined box and opened it.

Inside rested a magnificent ring—a rare, emerald-cut dark green diamond set in a band of polished platinum.

I stared at it, my heart pounding in my chest. "Matteo..."

"I don't make emotional gambles, Sophie," Matteo said, his voice filled with an intense, unshakeable sincerity that stripped away all the authority of the mafia boss, leaving only the man who loved me. "I’ve analyzed the metrics. I’ve reviewed the long-term projections. And the probability of my life being complete without you by my side... is zero."

He looked down into my eyes, holding the ring out.

"Will you marry me, Sophie Gallagher?"

I looked at the ring, then up into the cold, beautiful hazel eyes of Chicago’s bloodiest ruler—a man who had killed for power, but now stood before me, offering me his heart.

I smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that warmed the high-rise room.

May you like

"Your calculations are entirely correct, Mr. Romano," I whispered.

He didn't wait. He slipped the ring onto my finger, pulled me into his arms, and kissed me deeply, sealing the final equation of our lives together.
