Chapter 2 - The Confrontation on the Marble Floor"Lisa Davis!" Ava’s voice cut through the ambient jazz music like a rusted saw blade. She planted herself directly in front of Lisa and Zachary, her chest heaving with furious indignation. "What is the meaning of this? Are you completely out of your mind? This is a private, black-tie event for invited guests only!"

Lisa didn't blink. She gently looped her arm through Zachary’s offered elbow, maintaining a posture so poised it made Ava look frantic by comparison.

"An invitation you personally handed to me on Tuesday, Mrs. Covington," Lisa replied evenly, her honey-colored eyes locking onto Ava’s dilated pupils. "Or did your memory fail you between sips of champagne? You specifically requested that I attend. Though, if I recall correctly, you hoped to use my appearance as the evening's entertainment."

A sharp intake of breath rippled through the nearby guests who had crowded around to watch the drama unfold. Several prominent businessmen, including the city's lead real estate developer and the chief justice of the state appellate court, exchanged bewildered glances.

"Entertainment?" Chloe blurted out, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup. "You’re a housekeeper! You mop floors and empty trash cans! You have no business wearing jewelry like that—who did you steal it from? Did you rifle through the master bedroom before you came downstairs?"

That accusation was a bridge too far.

Before Lisa could speak, Zachary stepped forward, his body shielding Lisa as his dark eyes locked onto Chloe with a terrifying intensity.

"Watch your tongue, Chloe," Zachary warned, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute authority that brooked zero argument. "In this house, guests do not hurl baseless criminal accusations at people I have chosen to escort. And for the record, Lisa hasn't stolen a single thing. Every piece of clothing and jewelry she is wearing belongs to her by absolute right."

Ava scoffed loudly, crossing her arms over her sequined gown. "Right? What right does a hired cleaner have to vintage couture and antique emeralds? Zachary, have you lost your mind? She’s a servant!"

"I am an employee," Lisa corrected smoothly, her voice carrying a chilling clarity that instantly silenced the room. She gently released Zachary's arm and took one deliberate step forward, looking down at Ava with a gaze so piercing that the older woman instinctively took a half-step back. "For three years, I have cleaned your floors, washed your crystal, and listened to you and your friends mock everyone from your service staff to your own business partners. I did it because I was waiting for the right moment. And that moment has finally arrived."

Ava let out a nervous, brittle laugh, attempting to rally her fading composure. "Oh, please. What are you going to do? Complain to the labor board? Threaten to quit? Go right ahead, Lisa. You're fired effective immediately. Now get out of my house before I have the police throw you out for trespassing."

Lisa didn't raise her voice. She didn't lose her temper. Instead, she reached into the small, beaded clutch hanging from her wrist and pulled out a thick, manila envelope sealed with a red wax stamp bearing an unfamiliar, ancient crest.

"The police won't be removing me, Ava," Lisa said softly, her lips curving into a cold, dangerous smile. "In fact, by the end of this evening, you, your friends, and your precious estate won't even belong to you anymore."
