Chapter 2 - The Name in the Shadows

Hook: The arrogant groom was drinking champagne celebrating his forced takeover, until a fleet of black SUVs surrounded the estate and an old man stepped out.
---
Vincent slowly stood up from the floor. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't punch the wall. He simply reached inside his heavy leather jacket, pulled out a encrypted silver satellite phone, and pressed a single pre-programmed speed-dial button.
He placed the phone to his ear, staring out my living room window at the dark Dallas skyline.
“Marco,” Vincent said quietly.
Through the receiver, even from three feet away, I heard a sudden gasp of utter shock from the man on the other end. Marco Rossi was currently one of the most powerful real estate moguls in Texas, but twenty years ago, he was Vincent’s most loyal lieutenant.
“Don Vincent...?” Marco’s voice trembled with sheer disbelief. “Boss? Is that really you? It’s been ten years. We thought you were—”
“My daughter was beaten in the honeymoon suite of the Grand Regency Hotel an hour ago,” Vincent interrupted calmly, as if stating the weather. “Her husband, Javier Santos, and his mother, Carmen Santos, orchestrated it. They tried to extort her property through physical violence.”
A heavy, terrifying silence fell over the phone line. I could almost hear Marco’s heart stopping.
“Who did this?” Marco whispered, his tone dropping into pure venom. “The Santos family? Those small-time money launderers from North Dallas?”
“Find out where Javier and Carmen are right now,” Vincent ordered softly. “Gather the old guard. Every man who swore an oath to me before I retired. I want full tactical control of the city before the sun rises.”
“Consider it done, Don Vincent,” Marco replied instantly without a second of hesitation. “Ten minutes.”
Vincent ended the call and placed the phone back in his pocket. He turned back to look at Sofia, his expression softening back into that of a devoted father.
He walked into my bathroom, soaked a clean cloth in warm water, and walked back to the couch. With infinite tenderness, the man who had once ordered the destruction of entire crime syndicates gently wiped the dried blood from our daughter’s lip.
“Dad...” Sofia sobbed, leaning her head against his chest. “I was so stupid. I thought he loved me. I brought those monsters into our lives.”
“Listen to me, Sofia,” Vincent said, his voice deep and steady like a mountain rock. “You did nothing wrong. You trusted someone who lied to you. But a wolf does not get to keep the lamb just because he wore a sheep’s skin. You are a Moretti. And no one touches my blood and lives to brag about it.”
At that exact moment, my apartment doorbell chimed again.
I flinched, but Vincent didn't even blink. He walked to the door and pulled it open.
Standing in the hallway was Marco Rossi, dressed in a flawless dark tailored suit, flanked by four massive men in dark clothing whose hands were resting quietly inside their jackets. Marco’s eyes were sharp, disciplined, and burning with fierce loyalty. The moment he saw Vincent, he bowed his head with profound respect.
“Boss,” Marco said quietly. “We tracked them. Javier and Carmen didn't stay at the hotel. They returned to the Santos family estate in Preston Hollow. They brought their entire inner circle together—about twelve people. From what my informants inside the house say... they are currently opening bottles of vintage champagne, celebrating that they successfully forced Sofia to flee so they could claim abandonment on the marriage contract.”
A faint, cold smile touched the corner of Vincent’s lips. It was a smile that promised absolute ruin.
“They are celebrating,” Vincent noted softly.
“Yes, Don Vincent,” Marco replied. “Javier’s uncle—Police Captain Hector Santos—is also present at the house. He’s already making calls to cover up the hotel security footage from the Grand Regency.”
Vincent turned back to me. “Claire, lock the doors. Take Sofia into the bedroom and let her rest. I have business to attend to.”
“Vincent,” I called out as he turned toward the elevator.
He paused, looking back over his shoulder.
“Don't hold back,” I said, my voice filled with all the rage of a mother whose child had been brutalized.
Vincent gave me a single, slow nod. “I never do.”
Fifteen minutes later, a convoy of six sleek, matte-black SUVs cut through the quiet, tree-lined streets of Preston Hollow, an ultra-exclusive neighborhood where the city's wealthiest families lived behind iron gates.
Inside the grand Mediterranean-style mansion of the Santos family, music was blaring. Crystal glasses were clinking.
Javier Santos stood near the marble fireplace, wearing his silk pajamas, swirling a glass of fifty-year-old scotch. Beside him stood his mother, Carmen, draped in an expensive silk robe, proudly showing off Sofia’s diamond engagement ring which she had forcibly ripped from my daughter’s bruised hand before driving her out into the night.
“To the future of the Santos empire,” Carmen laughed, raising her glass to the gathered family members. “That weak, pathetic girl thought she could hold out against us. Now we have her Uptown penthouse, and by tomorrow afternoon, my brother Hector will have her locked away or discredited if she dares to speak a word!”
Javier snorted, taking a sip of his drink. “She cried like a little baby, Mom. Honestly, it was embarrassing. Her father is just some poor old washed-up farmer living in the countryside. They have no power to stop us.”
Suddenly, the music inside the mansion cut out completely.
BOOM!
A deafening explosion rocked the heavy wrought-iron security gates at the front of the estate. The massive iron doors were blown entirely off their hinges, crashing onto the stone driveway with a thunderous roar.
The glass in the living room windows rattled violently.
Javier dropped his scotch glass, the crystal shattering across the hardwood floor. “What the hell was that?!”
Captain Hector Santos immediately drew his service pistol from his shoulder holster, his face turning pale. “Stay back!”
Through the grand floor-to-ceiling windows, the family watched in absolute horror as six black SUVs glided smoothly onto the property, completely encircling the mansion. Headlights illuminated the manicured lawn with blinding white light.
The driver’s side door of the lead vehicle opened.
A single man stepped out into the night air. He wore faded jeans and an old leather jacket. He didn't carry a weapon in his hands. He simply walked toward the front entrance with smooth, measured, terrifying steps.
Behind him, dozens of heavily armed men in tactical gear poured out of the remaining vehicles, locking down every exit of the estate in under fifteen seconds.
Carmen clutched her son’s arm, her voice suddenly trembling with uncharacteristic panic. “Hector... who is that old man?”
Captain Hector Santos peered through the glass, his eyes widening in pure, paralyzed terror as he recognized the legendary face beneath the bright halogen lights. The gun in his hand began to shake uncontrollably.

“Oh God...” Hector whispered, his voice cracking. “That’s not a farmer... that’s Vincent Moretti.”
