Chapter 3 - The Library of SecretsThe east wing library of the Cole estate was a cavernous, two-story sanctuary of dark mahogany bookshelves, rolling brass ladders, and the heavy, intoxicating smell of aged paper and leather. It was also the room where Adrian spent eighteen hours a day orchestrating corporate acquisitions, defense contracts, and global logistics algorithms.

At precisely 9:01 a.m., I stood outside the heavy double doors, Nora’s small, warm hand clutched tightly in mine. She was still wearing the yellow cardigan and the oversized silk tie, looking remarkably pleased with herself.
I took a deep, trembling breath and tapped twice on the wood.
“Come in.”
I pushed the door open. Adrian was seated behind a massive, slate-topped modern desk, surrounded by multiple dual-monitor screens flashing real-time stock tickers and global shipping maps. He looked up, his sharp gaze cutting straight through the dim morning light filtering through the stained-glass windows.
“You’re one minute late, Elena,” he said without preamble.
“My apologies, Mr. Cole. The service elevator was delayed,” I replied smoothly, keeping my voice level despite the hammering of my heart.
Adrian’s eyes shifted downward, landing on Nora, who immediately let go of my hand, marched past my legs, and planted herself squarely in front of his desk.
She rested her hands on her hips, mimicking an intimidating posture she must have seen in a cartoon—or perhaps inherited through some bizarre genetic quirk from the Cole bloodline.
“Your desk is messy,” Nora announced, pointing a finger at a stack of unfiled compliance reports.
A heavy, stunned silence filled the cavernous library.
I braced myself for the explosion, my muscles tensing to lunge forward and scoop Nora away before the billionaire could freeze her with one of his trademark sub-zero glares.
Instead, a slow, profound shift occurred across Adrian’s face.
The cold, ruthless mask of the corporate titan cracked. The corners of his mouth twitched, and for a fleeting, terrifying second, I saw James staring back at me through Adrian’s eyes—the same effortless charm, the same amused indulgence toward the chaos of the world.
Adrian leaned back in his ergonomic leather chair, steepling his long fingers together.
“Is that so?” Adrian asked, his voice losing its boardroom frost. “And how do you propose we fix it, Agent Nora?”
“We need color-coding,” she declared solemnly, marching around the side of the desk as though she owned the building. She grabbed a red highlighter from his pen cup and held it up triumphantly. “Red means fire. Blue means water. Yellow means snacks.”
Adrian let out a low, rich chuckle—a sound that made my stomach flip.
“A sound filing system,” Adrian agreed, watching her with an expression that was dangerously close to tender. “Better than my current chief of operations.”
He looked up from Nora, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an unreadable depth.
“Leave her with me for an hour, Elena,” he said softly.
My spine stiffened instantly. “Mr. Cole, with all due respect, I am her mother—I should stay—”
“I am not going to eat her, Elena,” he cut in, his tone hardening just a fraction into quiet authority. “I simply want to review the quarterly estate budget with you in the adjacent study, while Agent Nora reorganizes my pen cup. Unless, of course, you have something to hide?”
The question hung in the air like a blade suspended by a single thread.
My breath caught. Did he know? Was this a trap?
“I have nothing to hide,” I said, lifting my chin with defensive pride.
“Good,” Adrian replied, standing up and walking around the desk. He crouched down beside Nora, handing her a stack of sticky notes with absolute, practiced ease. “Stay here and keep an eye on these papers, Nora. If anyone tries to steal my stapler, let me know.”

“I will protect it with my life,” Nora promised fiercely, clutching the stapler to her chest like a sacred relic.
I turned and walked toward the adjoining study, my legs feeling like lead, completely unaware that stepping into that room with Adrian Cole was about to open a Pandora's box of secrets that could destroy us all.
