Chapter 7 - The Final LedgerTwo months later, the Moretti syndicate was stronger, cleaner, and more unified than it had ever been.

The old-world brutality that had defined the family for decades was replaced by sharp, disciplined business operations. Salvatore ran the docks with an iron fist, while Adrian managed the overarching empire with a clarity and focus that terrified his remaining rivals.

But the forty-fourth-floor executive suite had undergone a few permanent renovations.

In the corner of Adrian’s massive office, right beside the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan, sat a small, bright pink play table covered in coloring books, crayons, and a stuffed gray rabbit.

It was a Friday evening. The weekend traffic hummed softly twelve hundred feet below.

Adrian sat at his mahogany desk, signing off on final shipping manifests, when a soft patter of barefoot steps echoed across the hardwood floor.

He didn't need to look up.

A small pair of arms wrapped around his leg, hugging him tightly.

Adrian smiled, setting his pen down. He leaned back in his leather chair, scooped Lily up effortlessly, and set her right on his lap, handing her a blue crayon and a fresh sheet of paper.

“Can you draw me a lion, Lily?” he asked.

She beamed proudly, gripping the crayon with her fist and immediately setting to work on the paper.

Adrian wrapped one arm securely around her waist, resting his other hand on the edge of the desk. The room was warm, safe, and completely quiet.

For the first time in his life, Adrian Moretti knew what it meant to truly rest—knowing that the little girl who had saved him was safe, and that his world, at long last, was completely in order.
