Chapter 3 - The Tangle UnravelsThe living room of the condominium felt less like a home and more like a crime scene. David was frantically throwing clothes into a battered nylon suitcase, his hands shaking so violently he dropped a pair of socks onto the floor three times.

"You can't do this, Natalie!" David shouted over his shoulder, his face slick with nervous sweat. "You can’t just kick me out like a common criminal! This is a legal residence! I have rights!"

"You had rights when you honored your vows, David," Natalie said from the kitchen counter, where she was calmly reviewing a preliminary report sent by Victor Vance’s office. "Now you have a court-ordered injunction preventing you from accessing any joint bank accounts, company credit cards, or investment portfolios. The locks were changed by digital override ten minutes ago."

At that moment, David’s phone began to vibrate violently on the coffee table. The screen lit up with a photo of Chloe Mercer blowing a kiss.

David stared at the phone as if it were a venomous snake. He made no move to pick it up.

"Are you going to answer that?" Natalie asked mildly, not looking up from her tablet. "Tell your girlfriend that her patron is currently experiencing a severe career setback. In fact, by noon today, the municipal development agency’s internal audit committee will receive copies of your email exchanges detailing the subcontracting kickbacks for her uncle’s firm."

David froze, his shirt half-buttoned. "You... you went through my work emails?"

"I went through everything, David," Natalie said, finally raising her eyes to look at him. "Did you honestly think that because I focused on clinical trials, I didn't know how to investigate fraud? You left your digital footprint everywhere. The state agency doesn't take kindly to senior managers trading public contracts for sexual favors. Your career in public administration is officially over."

Panic, pure and unadulterated, seized David. The arrogant confidence he usually projected was entirely gone, replaced by the desperate whine of a trapped animal. He dropped to his knees beside the suitcase, looking up at his wife with pleading eyes.

"Natalie, please. Think of my mother. Think of what this will do to my family. If I lose my job, I lose everything. I won't even be able to pay for a lawyer. Please... let’s handle this privately. We can sign a quiet separation agreement. You keep the condo, you keep everything, just don’t ruin me professionally."

Natalie stood up, smoothing the front of her skirt. She walked over and looked down at him with an expression of profound indifference.

"When you were lying in our bed with her, did you think of my family? Did you think of the five years I spent supporting your ambitions while you sneered behind my back?" Natalie asked quietly. "You wanted a high-flying lifestyle financed by my success, while playing the big man at your agency with a twenty-six-year-old subordinate. You built this bed, David. Now lie in it. Or rather, find somewhere else to lie, because you have exactly forty-five minutes before the building security escorts you to the lobby."

Without waiting for another word, Natalie turned on her heel and walked into her office, locking the door behind her.

Outside, in the real world, the storm was only beginning.

By nine o'clock, David arrived at the municipal development agency office, expecting a normal Tuesday morning. Instead, he was met at the security turnstiles by two HR representatives and an internal investigator. His security badge was deactivated with a sharp electronic beep before he could even swipe it.

"Mr. Brooks," the HR director said coldly, handing him a thick envelope. "You are placed on immediate administrative suspension pending an investigation into severe ethical violations, conflict of interest, and procurement fraud. Please surrender your office keys and company laptop immediately."

Across the open-plan office, Chloe Mercer sat at her desk, her eyes wide with horror as she watched David being escorted out of the building by security. Her phone buzzed continuously with panicked text messages from David, but she ignored them all, deleting her messaging app within five minutes to distance herself from the wreckage.

The life David had built on deception was crumbling in real time, and Natalie hadn't even broken a sweat.
