Chapter 4 - The Unmasking at the PierThe sudden termination of Grant Whitmore’s engagement to Vanessa Hale sent shockwaves through Chicago's high society, but the real war was just beginning.

Forty-eight hours after the party, Everett Whitmore—Grant’s fifty-eight-year-old uncle and senior syndicate capo—called an emergency assembly of the North Side Syndicate at the Pier 42 convention hall.
Everett was a broad, silver-haired man with an arrogant, sneering face who had spent fifteen years managing the stolen waterfront leases.
At 3:00 PM, the grand glass-walled conference room overlooking Lake Michigan was packed with thirty senior capos, corporate attorneys, and news reporters.
Everett stood at the podium, slamming his fist flat against the wood. "Grant has lost his mind! He’s breaking our merger with the Hale family over a maid! He’s attempting to surrender thirty percent of our waterfront assets to a dead dancer’s daughter!"
BOOM!
The heavy double oak doors at the rear of the hall were thrown wide open!
Walking down the central aisle, flanked by Chief Security Director Marcus Vance and eight armed guards, was Grant Whitmore.
And walking right beside him, holding his arm with effortless, queenly poise, was me.
I wore a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald silk pantsuit that celebrated my tall, slender figure. My dark hair was styled in glossy waves over my shoulders, my hazel eyes burning with absolute, unshakeable victory and sovereign clarity.
Down on my right hand rested the ten-carat emerald signet ring—the official Seal of the Brooks Family Trust, which Eleanor had officially returned to me that morning.
Everett Whitmore went paper-white. "EMILY BROOKS?!"
Grant stopped five feet from the podium, stepping in front of me, his broad six-foot-two frame casting a terrifying shadow over his uncle.
"Everett," Grant spake, his voice a dead, frozen whisper that dropped the room's temperature to zero. "Fifteen years ago, you forged Daniel Brooks's signature on the Pier 42 land transfer deed."
"THAT'S A LIE!" Everett shrieked, backing away toward his attorneys. "I OWN THOSE LEASES!"
Marcus Vance stepped forward, tapping an encrypted tablet screen that synced directly to the hall's forty-foot presentation displays:
THE FORENSIC AUDIT: Certified chemical analysis from the state forensic laboratory proving the 2011 signature on the land surrender deed was digitally forged.
THE ARSON EVIDENCE: Recorded audio confessions from the retired arson investigator detailing Everett’s $500,000 payoff to burn down the Brooks Dance Academy.
FEDERAL INDICTMENTS: Arrest warrants issued by the United States District Court for Systemic Land Fraud, Arson, and Extortion.
The thirty syndicate capos stood up in pure outrage, pointing fingers at Everett, completely severing all ties with him on the spot.
Lead Marshal Miller stepped forward, holding heavy steel handcuffs.
"Everett Whitmore," Marshal Miller declared coldly. "You are under arrest."

The cold steel cuffs locked tightly around Everett’s wrists behind his back. He wept hysterical, groveling pleas as marshals dragged him out of Pier 42 in total, public disgrace, surrounded by news cameras capturing his downfall for the evening news.
