Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of CardsThe chaos that erupted in the ballroom following Andrew's public takedown was unprecedented in the history of Manhattan society events.

Within minutes, federal marshals—who had been quietly waiting in the service corridors under Ethan’s direct coordination—stepped into the ballroom, displaying federal badges and placing Andrew under formal arrest for healthcare fraud, embezzlement, and domestic assault charges backed by the medical board's emergency suspension order.

As they dragged him down the center aisle, handcuffed and screaming obscenities, flashbulbs blinded the room. Journalists shouted questions, cameras recorded every agonizing second of his descent, and society donors stepped back in revulsion, shielding their drinks as the golden boy of New York medicine was led away in steel cuffs.

I watched from the quiet sanctuary of the VIP Green Room upstairs, sitting on a velvet sofa with a cup of hot chamomile tea between my hands.

The door clicked open, and Ethan walked in, loosening his black bow tie as he tossed his tuxedo jacket over the back of an armchair. He looked tired, but the dark, heavy storm cloud that had hung over his shoulders all evening was entirely gone.

He walked over, sitting down on the coffee table directly in front of me, resting his hands on my knees without applying any pressure, his dark eyes searching my face with tender concern.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly.

"I feel like I've been holding my breath for two years," I whispered, a tear slipping down my cheek—not of sorrow, but of profound, overwhelming release. "Is it really over? Can he... can he come back from this?"

"Never," Ethan said firmly, his voice leaving zero room for doubt. "The federal indictments are airtight. The hospital board has permanently revoked his medical license, and every asset he holds has been frozen pending civil restitution. He will spend the next ten to fifteen years defending himself in a federal courtroom. He will never practice medicine again, Ava. And he will never, ever come near you."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the invisible chains that had bound my soul finally dissolving into nothingness.

"Why did you do it?" I asked, looking down into his dark eyes. "You risked your foundation's reputation, your public standing, millions in donor capital... all for an executive assistant."

Ethan reached out, gently cupping my chin with his warm fingers, tilting my face upward so I had no choice but to look at him.

"You were never just an assistant, Ava," he said, his voice dropping into a low, vibrating register that resonated deep within my soul. "From the very first day you walked into my office, you were the only person in New York who saw past the empire, past the money, past the armor. I spent eleven months watching you carry the weight of the world while hiding your own broken heart. And the moment I saw those bruises... I knew I would burn Carter Tower to the ground before I let anyone hurt you for another second."

My heart pounded against my ribs, but this time, it wasn't out of fear. It was the terrifying, beautiful rush of falling into something real, safe, and unconditional.

"I love you, Ava," Ethan whispered, the confession hanging in the quiet air of the room like a sacred vow. "And if you'll let me... I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to be afraid again."

I didn't answer with words. I leaned forward, closing the microscopic distance between us, and pressed my lips against his.

It wasn't a tentative kiss. It was an anchor in a storm, a declaration of survival, and the beginning of a life I had never dared to dream of.
