Chapter 5 - Shadows Over the EstateBy noon, the storm that had battered the Brooklyn coast all night had cleared, leaving behind brilliant autumn sunlight that glinted off the glass towers of Manhattan across the river.

Inside the private study of Moretti Manor, the atmosphere was vastly different from the tension of the previous night. The space had been thoroughly swept by three separate sweep teams; every wire, every corner, and every inch of paneling had been verified clean.
Aleandro sat at his desk, reviewing the finalized asset-transfer documents that officially placed a controlling forty-one percent stake of Vanguard International under Moretti Holdings for the symbolic price of one dollar.
The intercom buzzed.
"Boss," Luca’s voice came through. "You have a visitor in the foyer. A federal prosecutor from the SDNY, accompanied by two agents. They have official clearance, and they brought the signed indictments for Isabella Romano and Victor Vance."
"Send them up," Aleandro said calmly.
A few moments later, Assistant United States Attorney Harrison stepped into the study, flanked by two armed federal marshals. Harrison was a seasoned prosecutor known for taking down untouchable syndicate bosses, yet standing in front of Aleandro Moretti, even he looked visibly cautious.
"Don Moretti," Harrison said, offering a stiff nod. "I received your legal team’s data package this morning. I must say... in my fifteen years with the Department of Justice, I’ve never seen a corporate espionage ring dismantled with such surgical precision in under twelve hours."
"We protect our investments, Counselor," Aleandro replied smoothly, not bothering to stand up. "The files on your desk contain every audio transcript, offshore wire transfer, and biometric login timestamp proving Isabella Romano and Victor Vance’s conspiracy against Moretti Holdings."
Harrison gestured for one of the marshals to pick up the encrypted drive resting on the corner of the desk. "This will be more than enough to secure life sentences without parole for both of them. Miss Romano is being transferred to the federal holding facility in Manhattan as we speak."
"Good," Aleandro said quietly. "Make sure she stays there."
As the federal agents turned to leave, Harrison paused at the doorway, looking back over his shoulder. "If I may ask, Don Moretti... how did you manage to locate the bug in the first place? Our digital forensics team scanned your entire office twice last month and found nothing."
Aleandro looked toward the empty space on the wall where his father’s carved wooden clock used to hang. It was currently down in the estate’s restoration workshop being cleaned and repaired.
"A four-year-old girl told me to check the clock," Aleandro said simply.
Harrison blinked, letting out a short, incredulous laugh. "Right. Of course." He nodded once and walked out, the heavy oak doors closing behind him with a soft click.
Aleandro remained seated for several minutes, the silence of the room washing over him. For the first time in his life, the emptiness in the study didn't feel like a threat. It felt like space waiting to be reclaimed.
A soft tap sounded at the door.
"Come in," Aleandro said.
The door creaked open, and Sophia stepped inside. She wore her new executive liaison blazer—a sharp, tailored navy suit that gave her an air of quiet dignity and strength. In her hand, she held a single leather-bound ledger.
"Mr. Moretti," Sophia said respectfully, stopping a few feet from the desk. "The estate audit for the south wing is complete. All domestic staff have been re-verified through our new security protocol, and the transition funds for the guesthouse have cleared."
Aleandro looked up, studying her for a moment. "And Emma?"
A warm, gentle smile broke across Sophia’s face. "She’s currently sitting in the garden with Luca, trying to teach him how to feed breadcrumbs to the koi fish. He looks more terrified of her than he did of Victor Vance."
Aleandro let out a low, genuine chuckle—a sound that hadn't graced the walls of his study in years. He stood up from his desk, walking around to stand face-to-face with Sophia.
"Sophia," Aleandro said, his voice carrying a deep, unshakeable sincerity. "You and your daughter saved everything I've built. Not just my empire, but my sanity. I want you to know that whatever you and Emma need—whatever safety, whatever future—this house will provide it unconditionally."
May you like
Sophia looked up into his dark, piercing eyes, seeing past the myth of Don Moretti to the man who had survived a lifetime of betrayal. She reached out and placed her hand gently over his forearm.
"You gave us a home when we had nothing left, Mr. Moretti," Sophia whispered. "We aren't going anywhere."
