Chapter 4 - The Spider's WebThe morning sun cast long, distorted shadows across the sprawling mahogany desk in Arthur Blackwood’s private study. The room smelled of old leather, expensive cigar smoke, and underlying tension.

Arthur sat behind his desk, reviewing the quarterly financial statements of Blackwood Global Logistics, but his mind was elsewhere. Across from him sat Dr. Vance, nervously wiping his sweaty palms with a silk handkerchief.

"What do you mean, her neurological readouts are fluctuating?" Arthur demanded, his voice dangerously low as he slammed the ledger onto the desk.

"Mr. Blackwood, I'm just reporting what the biometric mattress sensors recorded at 3:15 AM," Dr. Vance stammered, adjusting his glasses. "There was a sudden, sharp spike in muscle contraction activity in both of her lower extremities. Her heart rate elevated. It’s... it’s as if her nervous system attempted a spontaneous reset."

Arthur stood up slowly, walking over to the window that overlooked the gardens. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

"That’s impossible," Arthur muttered coldly. "The dosage you've been administering is calibrated to completely suppress motor function for twelve hours. Unless... unless something interfered with the compound."

"Interfered? How?" Dr. Vance asked, his voice shaking. "No one has access to her wing except the maids, and I personally oversee her diet."

"What about that boy?" Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits as he recalled the barefoot vagrant who had stopped the stallion yesterday. "The stable brat. Who is he?"

"His name is Julian," Dr. Vance said, swallowing hard. "His mother was Elena Vance—no relation to me, thank God—the former chief vet who died in a cabin fire ten years ago after we... after she was let go from the estate. Everyone thought the boy vanished into the backcountry."

Arthur turned away from the window, a dark, calculating smile spreading across his face. "He came back. And he’s sniffing around where he doesn't belong. A stray dog wandering onto Blackwood land needs to be put down permanently."

"What about Clara?" Dr. Vance asked anxiously. "If her memory is returning, if she realizes—"

"She realizes nothing," Arthur interrupted sharply, his voice cutting like a razor. "Tomorrow is her eighteenth birthday. Tomorrow is the gala where she signs over the irrevocable trust management rights to me, citing her medical incapacity. Once those papers are signed, she is legally a non-entity. Whether she can walk or not won't matter anymore. A locked psychiatric ward in Switzerland will accommodate her very nicely."

Arthur walked back to his desk and picked up his phone. "Find the boy. Bring him to the basement stables. And make sure he learns what happens when wild animals wander into a hunter's trap."
