Chapter 4 - The Snakes in the GardenBy dawn, the news of Emily’s promotion had spread through the Ferrara estate like poison through a vein.

At 8:00 AM, Emily walked down the grand marble staircase carrying Santino’s morning briefing folder, dressed in a sleek, tailored gray skirt suit that Santino's personal tailor had delivered to her room at 6:00 AM. Gone were the oversized sweaters and nervous posture; she walked with a quiet, controlled efficiency that drew the cold, murderous stares of every guard stationed in the foyer.

In the formal dining room, the family had gathered for an emergency morning council.

Michael Ferrara sat at the long mahogany table, surrounded by three senior capos from the Boston and Providence factions: Frank "The Bull" Moretti, Joey "Pipes" Valenti, and an older, sharp-eyed man named Dominic Vance.

When Emily stepped through the double doors, pushing Santino’s high-tech electric wheelchair into the room, the entire table went dead silent.

Michael set his silver coffee spoon down with a loud CLACK.

"Santino," Michael began, his voice dripping with false concern as he stood up from his chair. "You should be resting in bed. The doctor said your lungs—"

"The doctor works for me, Michael," Santino interrupted smoothly, positioning his chair at the head of the table. "And my lungs are clear enough to breathe the air in this room."

Santino gestured for Emily to stand directly at his right shoulder, an honor usually reserved exclusively for the family underboss.

Michael’s eyes narrowed as he looked at Emily, his nostrils flaring slightly with unadulterated fury. "Is it wise to have a civilian in the room for a council meeting, cousin? We have family matters to discuss."

"Miss Taylor is my chief executive secretary," Santino replied, his voice calm, flat, and absolute. "She handles all my private documentation. Anything you have to say to me, you can say in front of her."

Frank Moretti, a massive man with a neck thicker than his head, slammed his coffee cup down. "This is ridiculous, Santino! She’s a temp! A nobody from South Boston! You’re putting family business into the hands of a girl who’s been here nine days!"

"This girl did more for me in four seconds yesterday afternoon than you did in eleven years, Frank," Santino said softly, turning his dark eyes onto the heavy-set capo.

Frank went red in the face, but he shut his mouth, lowering his eyes.

Santino tapped his finger against the mahogany table. "Now, let’s talk about the pool."

The room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees instantly.

"The safety brake on my chair," Santino continued, his tone dangerously conversational, "was tampered with. The hydraulic line was cut with a high-precision wire cutter. And the latch on the pool gate was greased."

Michael cleared his throat, taking a slow sip of his water. "We’ve already questioned the maintenance staff, Santino. The pool boy was a new hire. He panicked and ran when he saw what happened. We’re tracking him down right now."

"Don't bother," Santino said flatly. "Leo found him three hours ago near the highway in Fall River. He had fifty thousand dollars in cash in his trunk and a bullet hole in the back of his head."

Michael’s hand twitched slightly against his napkin.

Emily stood at Santino’s shoulder, her eyes darting subtly across the faces at the table. She opened her leather notebook, her fountain pen gliding across the paper, noting every posture shift, every nervous glance, every micro-expression.

She knew how this game was played. The pool boy was the sacrifice. Michael was the mastermind. But Frank Moretti and Joey Valenti were the muscle backing the move.

"Until I find out who authorized that fifty thousand dollars," Santino declared, leaning back in his chair, "all territory distributions for the quarter are frozen. No shipments out of the Providence docks. No casino payouts in Atlantic City. Everything stops."

A chorus of angry protests erupted from the capos.

"You can't do that, Santino!" Joey Valenti shouted, jumping out of his chair. "The men are expecting their cuts! You're choking us out!"

"Then bring me the man who cut my brakes," Santino commanded, his voice slicing through the noise like an iron blade. "Meeting adjourned."
