Chapter 5 - The Confession in the DarkThe drive back from the harbor estate was wrapped in a heavy, electric silence.

The party had ended without further incident—largely because no one dared approach the table where Roman Vulov sat in absolute dominance, keeping Thea shielded by his presence the entire evening. Now, the tinted windows of the limousine framed the neon streaks of the late-night city as it blurred past in the rain.

Thea sat close to the window, watching the reflections dance across the glass. Her heart was still beating at an elevated rhythm, not from fear, but from the overwhelming intensity of the night. Being in Roman’s world had shown her sides of him she never could have imagined: a man capable of ruthless authority, yet fiercely, unapologetically protective of her.

She felt his gaze on her profile.

“You’re quiet,” Roman said softly, breaking the quiet of the cabin.

Thea turned her head slowly to look at him. In the dim amber light of the car, his sharp features looked carved from stone, yet his gray eyes were impossibly soft.

“I’m just processing,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “Everyone in that room was terrified of you, Roman. Billionaires, politicians, powerful men... they all cowered when you looked at them.”

“Power is a tool, Thea,” Roman replied, his voice steady. “Most men use it to exploit others. I use it to keep the wolves away from my door.”

“And what about me?” Thea asked, her courage flaring up. “Am I a wolf, or am I someone you’re keeping behind your door?”

Roman didn't answer immediately. He shifted closer on the plush seat, closing the distance between them until his shoulder brushed hers. He reached out, his warm fingers gently cupping her chin, tilting her face upward so she had no choice but to look straight into his eyes.

“You are the only person who has ever made me want to leave the door unlocked,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly register that sent a shockwave of heat straight through her veins.

Thea’s breath caught. The intensity in his gaze was staggering.

“You know my secrets, Roman,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “You know I’m just a librarian. You know I live a quiet, ordinary life. But there’s something else... something I’ve never told anyone.”

Roman’s thumb brushed softly against her lower lip, his touch tender, reverent, and heavy with unspoken desire. “Tell me.”

Thea swallowed hard, the vulnerability she usually kept locked behind iron doors finally spilling out into the open.

“At twenty-eight,” she confessed, her voice barely a breath against his skin, “I have two secrets I guarded carefully. I had never slept with anyone, and I was not ashamed of it, even when friends laughed or men lost interest. I had never wanted convenience or an experience chosen because of social pressure. I had been waiting for a connection that felt real.”

She stopped, bracing herself for judgment, for mockery, or for the sudden withdrawal of a man who moved in circles where everything was easily bought and sold.

Instead, Roman’s eyes darkened with an emotion so fierce, so profound, it took her breath away entirely.

“You’ve never been touched,” Roman stated quietly, not as a question, but as a realization that seemed to anchor his soul.

“No,” Thea whispered, closing her eyes for a second as heat flooded her cheeks. “Never.”

Roman’s hand slid from her chin down to the nape of her neck, his fingers tangling softly in her blonde hair, holding her gently, perfectly still. When she opened her eyes again, his face was inches from hers.

“Listen to me, Thea,” Roman said, his voice a low, fierce vow that echoed in the quiet car. “In my world, everything has a price, and everything is traded. But you... you are sacred. I would burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone touch you with anything less than absolute reverence.”

His head dipped closer.

Thea’s eyes fluttered shut. As his lips finally met hers, the world outside the limousine—the mafia wars, the powerful enemies, the quiet library shelves—vanished completely. There was only the warmth of his mouth, the gentle strength of his arms holding her, and the undeniable truth that she had finally found the connection she had been waiting for her entire life.
