Chapter 6 - The Mirror of TruthThe silence in the grand foyer was so absolute that the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the study sounded like heavy sledgehammer blows.

Diego stood frozen, his eyes darting between Valentina—who was rubbing her eyes sleepily near the library door—and Maya, who stood like a silent sentinel on the grand staircase. They were identical in every physical dimension: the shape of their brow, the curl of their hair, the intense, unwavering clarity in their eyes.

"What... what do you mean?" Diego asked, his voice cracking slightly as he took a slow step toward the stairs.

Maya descended two more steps, her small shoes clicking softly against the marble. "You thought you lost one child, and you thought you found her yesterday," Maya said, her tone devoid of childlike hesitation, carrying the weight of a secret she had been trained to guard. "But you didn't lose one. You lost both. And the one you've been protecting in the east wing all week... isn't the one they planned to keep."

Eleanor let out a sharp, ragged gasp, taking a stumbling step forward. "Quiet! You foolish child, you don't know what you're saying—"

"I know everything, Great-Grandmother," Maya interrupted, fixing her cold gaze on the matriarch. "I heard the men talking in the safehouse. They said the original plan was to switch us back if the audit failed. They said Valentina was the decoy designed to take the fall if Diego ever started digging into the trust accounts."

Clara’s hands flew to her mouth, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she dropped to her knees, opening her arms toward the staircase. "Maya... my sweet girl..."

Maya stopped on the bottom step. For the first time, the icy, defensive armor of her guarded demeanor cracked. A tremor shook her lower lip, and she dropped her stuffed rabbit, running down the final steps straight into Clara’s open arms.

Clara scooped her up, burying her face in Maya’s dark curls, sobbing openly as she held both of her daughters—separated at birth, raised in completely different worlds, yet miraculously reunited under the same hostile roof.

Diego stood over them, his gaze slowly shifting from the mother and her twin daughters back to Eleanor. The cold, calculating billionaire who had once ruled his empire with ruthless detachment was gone. In his place stood a man whose heart had been stripped bare, leaving only raw, burning fury.

"Julian," Diego said without turning around.

"Yes, Diego?" Julian stepped forward instantly, his tablet out and ready.

"Contact the federal prosecutor's office. Amend the indictment against my mother and her co-conspirators to include kidnapping, human trafficking, falsification of vital records, and child endangerment." Diego turned his full, terrifying gaze onto Eleanor. "Have the estate security detail lock down every perimeter exit. No one leaves this property until the authorities arrive."

Eleanor staggered backward, her manicured hands gripping the air as her empire, her control, and her lifetime of meticulously crafted lies collapsed around her in a matter of seconds.

"You can't do this to me, Diego!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with desperate rage. "I built this family! I made you what you are!"

"No, Mother," Diego said quietly, walking over to where Clara sat on the marble floor holding both of his daughters close to her chest. He knelt down beside them, resting his large, calloused hand gently over their shoulders. "You tried to destroy what I am. But you failed."
