Chapter 2 - The Cedar PanelThe silence inside the master dressing room was heavier than the air downstairs, where three hundred guests were likely whispering in rising panic. Adrian stood inches away from the cedar partition, his breath catching in his throat. Every instinct he had buried, every lingering doubt he had forced down with alcohol and overwork during the past three years, rushed back to the surface with the force of a tidal wave.

Natalie stepped into the closet beside him, her hand hovering near her mouth. “Adrian... open it.”

Adrian didn't hesitate. He pressed his thumb against the hidden pressure latch embedded in the intricate wood grain of the molding. With a soft, pneumatic click, the cedar panel swung inward on concealed German hinges.

Inside the narrow alcove sat a velvet-lined shelf.

And resting squarely in the center of that shelf was a small, rectangular red Cartier jewelry case, its gold embossed logo catching the amber light.

Natalie let out a sharp gasp, her hand flying to cover her mouth. “That’s... that’s Claire’s box. The one she kept her grandmother’s diamond choker and her original eternity band in. The police... the police report from the crash said all her personal effects in the car were burned or lost in the ravine!”

Adrian reached into the dark alcove, his fingers brushing against the cold leather of the box. He lifted it out. It had some weight to it. It wasn't empty.

He carried it out into the well-lit bedroom, setting it down gently on the surface of Claire’s antique mahogany vanity. The dressing table mirror reflected his pale, hardened face—a face that bore no resemblance to the compliant, grieving fiancé who had walked down the stairs twenty minutes ago.

“Open it, Adrian,” Natalie urged, her voice trembling with a mixture of grief and mounting rage. “Please. Open it.”

Adrian released the brass clasp on the red box and lifted the lid.

Inside, resting on black velvet, was Claire’s platinum eternity band, gleaming as brightly as the day they exchanged vows. Beside it lay a stack of folded hotel receipts, a flash drive labeled ‘Backup-2023’, and a handwritten letter sealed in an envelope bearing Claire’s immaculate, sweeping handwriting.

Adrian’s name was written across the front of the envelope in black ink: For Adrian. If anything happens to me.

“She knew,” Natalie whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes as she stared at the letter. “My sister knew someone was coming for her.”

Adrian picked up the letter, his thumb tracing his own name. The date scrawled in the top right corner was terrifyingly clear: three days before the fatal car crash.

Before he could slide the letter from the envelope, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the hallway outside the master suite.

Click.

Adrian froze. Natalie spun around, her eyes widening in terror.

Someone was standing in the doorway of the master bedroom.

The amber light from the hallway spilled across the carpet, framing a tall, slender silhouette draped in midnight-blue silk. Madison Cole stood in the threshold, her expression no longer panicked, no longer defensive.

Her face was completely, terrifyingly blank. And in her right hand, she held a sleek, silenced Walther PPK pistol—a weapon Adrian recognized instantly from his private gun safe downstairs.
