Chapter 2 - The Shadow of MorettiVincent was taller than I remembered from the diner.

Broad-shouldered, impeccably groomed, wearing a midnight-black coat over a charcoal suit, he brought an aura into the cramped, low-rent apartment that made the room feel instantly smaller, cold, and heavy with absolute authority. His dark eyes swept over the room—taking in the broken furniture, the shattered glass, the blood on the floor—and finally landed on me.

When he saw my arm, something subtle changed in his face. His jaw tightened by a fraction of a millimeter. The atmosphere in the room temperature plummeted into absolute ice.

"Who the hell are you?!" Mark screamed, staggering back against the kitchen counter, his hand instinctively reaching for a heavy steak knife sitting on the wooden block. "This is private property! Get the hell out of my house before I call the cops!"

Vincent didn't look at Mark. He didn't even acknowledge his existence.

He walked past Mark as if he were a ghost, stepping over the debris on the floor until he stopped directly beside me. He knelt down on one knee, his motion fluid and surprisingly silent for a man of his size.

"Lena," Vincent said softly. His voice was the same as it had been on the phone—deep, steady, and utterly unshakable.

"Vincent..." I sobbed, the breath catching in my throat as tears finally spilled over my battered cheeks. "You... you came."

"I gave you my word," he replied quietly.

He reached out with a gloved hand, gently brushing a lock of blood-matted hair away from my face. His fingers were warm against my cold skin. He glanced down at my broken arm, his eyes hardening into flint.

"Can you stand?" he asked.

"I... I don't think so," I whispered.

Without a second's hesitation, Vincent slid one strong arm beneath my knees and the other behind my back, lifting me into his chest with effortless grace. He was careful not to jostle my left arm, cradling me as if I were made of delicate glass.

"Hey!" Mark yelled, taking a step forward with the steak knife raised in a trembling hand. "Put my wife down! You can't just walk in here and take her!"

Vincent didn't even turn his head. He simply looked at the man standing to his right—a towering enforcer named Marco with a scarred neck.

"Handle him," Vincent said flatly.

"With pleasure, Boss," Marco replied.

Before Mark could even swing the knife, Marco closed the distance in a blur of movement. He grabbed Mark’s wrist, twisting it inward until a sickening snap echoed through the room—an echo of the exact sound Mark had made to my arm minutes earlier.

Mark shrieked in agony, dropping the knife as he sank to his knees, clutching his ruined wrist.

"Shut him up," Vincent added casually as he carried me toward the shattered front door. "He makes too much noise."

Another enforcer stepped forward, delivered a short, brutal strike to Mark’s solar plexus, and knocked him unconscious onto the floor.

Vincent carried me down the hallway, down the stairs, and out into the cool, rain-slicked New York night. A sleek, black armored SUV was waiting at the curb with its engine idling. The rear door was opened by a driver before we even reached the sidewalk.

Vincent set me gently onto the soft leather back seat, climbing in right beside me. He pulled a dark cashmere blanket over my shoulders and pressed a small, clean cloth against the cut on my cheek.

"Where are we going?" I whimpered, my consciousness flickering as the shock began to take full control of my body. "The... the hospital?"

"My personal physician is waiting at my estate in Long Island," Vincent said, pulling my good hand into his firm, warm grip. "No public ERs. No questions. No police reports until you are safe."

"Why are you doing this for me?" I whispered, staring up at the sharp profile of the most feared man in the city. "I'm just a waitress."

May you like

Vincent looked down at me, his dark eyes fierce and unyielding in the dim light of the streetlamps passing overhead.

"Nobody touches what belongs under my protection, Lena," he said softly. "And from the moment you called that number, you became mine to protect."
