Chapter 6 - The Siege of Lake ForestThe kiss wasn't rushed or desperate. It was warm, certain, and filled with a quiet promise that chased away every lingering shadow of my past. When Marcus finally pulled back, resting his forehead gently against mine, my heart was racing faster than it had during the airport ambush.

“Stay with us, Emily,” he whispered against my lips. “Build a real home here. With me.”
Before I could answer, a piercing, high-pitched alarm shrieked through the tranquility of the estate.
Wooo-wooo-wooo!
The warm, romantic atmosphere shattered instantly.
The overhead lights flickered, plunged into emergency red backup mode, and the smart glass windows instantly polarized into opaque tactical defense shields.
Marcus stepped back, his entire demeanor shifting in a fraction of a second from gentle suitor to cold, lethal commander.
His encrypted tablet buzzed violently on the mahogany desk. He snatched it up, swiped across the biometric scanner, and stared at the satellite telemetry map.
“Damn it,” Marcus cursed under his breath.
“What is it?!” I asked, panic flaring in my chest again. “Is it Vanguard?!”
“Worse,” Marcus replied, his jaw tight as he tapped commands into his secure comms link. “It’s not a corporate raid. It’s a tactical extraction team led by your ex-husband’s new financial backers. They bypassed our outer radar by piggybacking on a Coast Guard storm patrol chopper.”
“They’re here? At the house?!”
“Miller!” Marcus barked into his wrist communicator. “Initiate Lock-Down Omega! Seal the upper residential wing! Do not let anyone breach the nursery!”
“Copy that, Mr. Whitmore! We’ve got multiple hostiles rappelling onto the glass roof!” Miller’s voice crackled back through static. “They’re heavily armed! We need backup—now!”
“Hold the line for three minutes,” Marcus ordered. “I’m coming down.”
He grabbed a heavy tactical vest from the library’s hidden wall compartment and slipped it over his cashmere sweater, sliding a sleek, encrypted pistol holster onto his hip.
He turned to me, his eyes burning with absolute determination.
“Emily, lock this door behind me. Do not open it for anyone except me or Miller. Do you understand?”
“Marcus, no!” I cried, grabbing his arm. “You can’t go out there! They’re looking for me! They want my adoption files!”
“They want us,” Marcus corrected softly, pressing a quick, fierce kiss to my forehead. “And I don't lose the things that matter.”
Before I could stop him, he turned and sprinted out of the library, slamming the heavy oak door behind him.
Click.
The electronic deadbolt engaged automatically from the outside.
I stood alone in the red-tinted emergency light of the grand library, listening to the muffled sound of gunfire echoing faintly from the courtyard below. Upstairs, in the nursery, Annie let out a sudden, startled cry.

My maternal instincts roared to life, overriding the paralyzing fear in my chest.
I sprinted toward the private staircase leading to the upper residential wing, determined to protect my daughter, no matter what monsters were waiting in the dark.
