Chapter 3 - The Boardroom CoupThe executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Sterling Global Tower smelled of old leather, polished mahogany, and high-end espresso. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Hanoi skyline glittering under the midnight rain, but inside the room, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Twelve men and women sat around the massive horseshoe-shaped conference table. These were the heavyweights of the financial sector—board members who had nodded politely while Adrian systematically dismantled my reputation, executives who had accepted the narrative of my mental collapse without asking to see a single independent medical chart.
When the heavy oak doors swung open and I walked in, followed closely by Maya and Charles Whitmore, three board members instinctively stood up.
Arthur Vance, the senior vice chairman and Adrian’s oldest ally on the board, cleared his throat awkwardly. "Evelyn... this is highly irregular. Under the current emergency bylaws enacted by Adrian—"
"Adrian is currently residing in a federal holding cell downstairs," I interrupted, my voice ringing clear and calm across the silent room. I walked straight to the head of the table—the seat Adrian had occupied for the past ten years—and pulled out the high-backed leather chair.
I did not sit down. I simply rested my hands on the backrest.
"That’s impossible," Vance stammered, his face flushing a mottled red. "The federal authorities have no jurisdiction over internal corporate governance without a formal indictment from the SEC."
Charles tossed a thick sheaf of legal documents onto the polished wood in front of Vance. The heavy thud echoed like a gunshot.
"Federal indictment, SEC fraud charges, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit state-sanctioned medical abduction," Charles listed off, his tone entirely devoid of emotion. "The papers were signed by three federal judges twenty minutes ago. Adrian Sterling’s voting rights, executive powers, and corporate access have been permanently revoked under Section 4 of the Sterling Family Trust Charter."
Murmurs erupted around the table. Several members reached for the documents, flipping frantically through the pages of forensic audits, Swiss bank records, and the explosive transcript of Adrian and Bianca discussing my planned demise.
"Wait," a younger board member named Jennifer Cole said, her eyes wide as she stared at the DNA report attached to the top of the file. "Who is... who is this young woman?"
Maya stepped forward into the ring of light cast by the overhead brass chandelier. She held her head high, the silver oak-leaf bracelet catching the light with every subtle movement.
"My name is Maya Sterling," she said, her voice steady and resonant, carrying an undeniable authority that made several veteran executives sit up a little straighter. "And according to the second will filed in Zurich by my grandfather in 2004, I am the legal successor to the controlling voting bloc of Sterling Global."
Vance slammed his hand onto the table. "This is absurd! A sudden apparition appearing out of nowhere with a forged document claiming succession? We have no proof she is who she says she is! DNA samples can be manipulated, notarized papers can be—"
"The DNA sample was pulled from federal medical databases during her intake processing tonight, Arthur," Charles cut him off, leaning over the table and staring Vance directly in the eye. "And the notary in Zurich was verified by Interpol before midnight. Furthermore, under Article 9 of the primary charter, if the primary beneficiary—Evelyn Sterling—is incapacitated or reinstated after an unlawful removal, she retains absolute veto power over all board appointments."
I finally pulled out the chair and sat down. I looked around the table, meeting the gaze of every single executive who had watched me fade away without lifting a finger to help.
"For eighteen months," I began, my voice dangerously quiet, "you allowed a man who married into this family to treat my life, my health, and my company as his personal playground. You signed off on restructuring plans without auditing the subsidiaries. You accepted my absence as a convenient casualty of mental illness."
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table, my eyes sweeping across the room.
"That error in judgment ends tonight."
Vance swallowed hard, his bravado rapidly evaporating under the weight of the evidence stacked in front of him. "Evelyn... we were misled. Adrian presented medical documents signed by licensed physicians. We had no reason to suspect—"
"You had every reason to suspect," I corrected him sharply. "You simply didn't care, because the stock prices were climbing and quarterly dividends were high. But that growth was built on embezzlement, shell companies, and toxic debt."
I slid a clean document across the table toward Jennifer Cole.
"Jennifer, as of this moment, you are promoted to Interim Chief Financial Officer. Your first task is to freeze all secondary accounts tied to Adrian’s overseas holdings and initiate a full forensic audit of every subsidiary operating in the real estate and logistics sectors."
Jennifer looked down at the paper, stunned, before slowly nodding. "Understood, Evelyn."
I turned my attention back to Arthur Vance. "And Arthur? You have until 9:00 AM tomorrow to submit your formal resignation to the human resources department, or you will be named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the federal embezzlement filings currently sitting on Charles’s desk."
Vance turned the color of ash. He opened his mouth to speak, closed it, and slowly stood up, pushing his chair back with a soft scrape against the floor. Without a word, he turned and walked out of the boardroom, the heavy doors clicking shut behind him.
The room fell into absolute silence.

I looked at Maya, who was standing beside my chair, watching me with a mixture of awe and fierce pride.
"Welcome to the board, Maya," I said softly. "Let’s show them how a real Sterling runs an empire."
