Chapter 2 - The Widow’s PerformanceWithin seconds, the heavy double doors of our suite flew open. Footsteps thudded against the hardwood floor, followed by panicked gasps.

"Mrs. Carter! Oh my god, what happened?!"
It was security guard Miller, stationed in the hallway, rushing into the room with his uniform half-buttoned. Behind him stood two other guards and—conveniently—Adrian, who had apparently spent the night in the guest suite down the hall. Adrian burst through the doorway wearing a silk bathrobe, his hair artfully mussed, playing the part of the devoted, frantic business partner waking up to tragedy.
"Isabella! What is it?!" Adrian yelled, rushing toward the bed.
Isabella was kneeling beside me, her hands pressed against her face, great, dry sobs racking her slender shoulders. I kept my eyes closed, my breathing shallow and even, perfectly mimicking a corpse frozen in rigor mortis.
"He's... he's not breathing!" Isabella wailed, her voice cracking with Oscar-winning perfection. "I woke up and tried to kiss him, but his skin was ice cold! Oh, Nathan! My love! Wake up!"
Adrian dropped to his knees beside her, grabbing my wrist and pressing two fingers against my pulse point. He held his hand there for a long moment, and I could feel the microscopic tremor of triumph in his fingers. He looked up at Miller with a face carved from stone and absolute devastation.
"He's gone," Adrian whispered, theatrical grief dripping from every syllable. "Call 911. Call the medical examiner. And someone... someone get Carter Global's general counsel on the phone immediately. We need to secure the assets before the markets open."
"Right away, Mr. Harrison," Miller stammered, frantically pulling out his radio.
I listened to the chaos unfold around me, marveling at the sheer speed of their machinery. They had rehearsed this. They had timelines, press releases, and legal loopholes mapped out down to the minute.
"My poor husband," Isabella sobbed, burying her face in Adrian’s chest as he wrapped his arms around her in a comforting embrace. Through my closed eyelashes, I could sense their proximity. I could feel the quiet, vibrating energy of their victory. They thought they had won. They thought the billion-dollar empire was already theirs to carve up like a Thanksgiving turkey.
"Shh, Izzy," Adrian murmured into her hair, his voice smooth and laced with false sorrow. "You're safe now. I'm here. We're going to take care of everything. Carter Global belongs to us now."
Us. The word hung in the air like a foul odor.
Sirens began to wail in the distance, rising from the Manhattan streets below, growing louder by the second. Within ten minutes, paramedics and local police officers flooded the penthouse suite. Cameras flashed, flashlights swept across the designer furnishings, and solemn-faced investigators began cordoning off the bedroom with yellow crime scene tape.
A detective named Vance, a hardened veteran with tired eyes and a rumpled trench coat, stepped up to the bed. He checked my wrist, shone a penlight into my unmoving eyes, and turned to Isabella, who was now wrapped in a floral quilt provided by a sympathetic officer.
"Mrs. Carter, I'm deeply sorry for your loss," Detective Vance said, pulling out a small notebook. "Given the sudden nature of this passing, we're going to need to run a full toxicology screen before releasing the body to the coroner. Was your husband complaining of any health issues last night?"
Isabella sniffled, dabbing a tissue at her dry eyes. "No, Detective. He seemed completely fine. We... we had a glass of whiskey together before bed to celebrate our wedding night. He just... he never woke up."
"I see," Vance muttered, his gaze drifting to the empty glass on the nightstand. "Did he finish the entire glass?"
"Yes," Isabella answered without missing a beat. "He always has a nightcap."
"Well, Mrs. Carter," Vance said, snapping his notebook shut with a sharp click. "We'll take the glass for analysis. Until the lab results come back, this is officially an unattended, suspicious death. I'll need you and Mr. Harrison to remain available for formal questioning down at the precinct."
Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly, though he kept his expression suitably solemn. "Detective, surely that won't be necessary today. Mrs. Carter is in deep shock. As the executive vice president and primary business partner of Carter Global, I can handle any—"

"Mr. Harrison," Vance interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute authority. "When a billionaire drops dead twelve hours after his wedding under mysterious circumstances, everybody is a suspect until proven otherwise. Step aside."
I could hear Adrian grinding his teeth. The first crack in their impenetrable armor had just appeared.
