Chapter 3 - The Rehearsal Dinner at Nob HillThe Nob Hill penthouse was transformed into a glittering palace of white orchids, crystal candelabras, and floating candles that reflected the glittering city lights stretching out across the bay.

One hundred and fifty of Silicon Valley’s elite—venture capitalists, tech founders, board members, and high-society journalists—mingled smoothly, holding crystal flutes of champagne and speaking in hushed, reverent tones about the upcoming union of Apex Biotech’s golden couple.
At the center of it all stood Tristan.
He was wearing a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, holding court near the grand piano, laughing charm and charisma into the ears of three senior partners from Sequoia Capital. He looked invincible. He looked like a man who had won the game of life before thirty-five.
And then there was Tessa.
She wasn't on the official guest list, of course. But Tristan had smuggled her in through the service elevator, dressing her in a sleek, understated champagne-colored silk gown that skirted the line between professional assistant and clandestine mistress. She hovered near the edge of the ballroom, clutching a glass of sparkling water, her eyes darting nervously around the room as if waiting for the floor to open up and swallow her.
I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in the master suite upstairs, smoothing down the fabric of my custom Oscar de la Renta ivory gown. It was severe, elegant, and impossibly chic—costing more than a mid-sized car, paid for entirely out of my personal venture fund.
There was a soft knock at the bedroom door.
Tristan slipped inside, closing the heavy oak door quietly behind him. He walked up behind me, resting his hands on my bare shoulders, his chin coming to rest against my hair.
“You look breathtaking, Zoe,” he whispered, his voice smooth and hypnotic. “Are you ready for this? Tomorrow, we take our vows at Grace Cathedral, the tech world watches us tie the knot, and by Monday morning, Apex announces our Series D expansion. We are literally on top of the world.”
I looked at our reflection in the glass. Side by side, we looked like a corporate brochure for the American Dream.
“I’ve never been more ready, Tristan,” I said softly, turning around to face him. I reached up, gently adjusting his silk bow tie with deliberate slowness. “Everything is exactly where it’s supposed to be.”
Tristan smiled, kissing my forehead with practiced tenderness. “I love you, Zoe. Let’s go down. The guests are waiting for our toast.”
We descended the grand spiral staircase hand in hand.
The room fell into a respectful, adoring hush as we reached the floor. Microphones clicked on. The lighting softened into a warm, amber glow.
Tristan stepped forward, lifting a crystal flute filled with vintage champagne, pulling me close to his side with his arm draped possessively around my waist.
“Thank you all for being here tonight,” Tristan began, his rich, baritone voice carrying effortlessly across the ballroom. “As many of you know, Apex Biotech isn't just a company—it’s a revolution in human health. And behind every great breakthrough is a brilliant mind. Tonight, as I look at Zoe—my partner in science, my partner in life, my soulmate—I am reminded that true innovation is finding the person who completes your vision.”
Polite, enthusiastic applause rippled through the crowd. Several venture capitalists nodded approvingly. Tessa stood near the back pillar, watching with a strange, fixed expression that hovered somewhere between triumph and terror.
“To Zoe,” Tristan raised his glass high. “My heart, my future, my everything.”
“To Zoe!” the crowd echoed in unison.
I raised my own glass, taking a slow, delicate sip of the champagne. Then, instead of stepping back, I didn't let go of the microphone. I reached out, my fingers tapping lightly against the wireless grid, producing a sharp, piercing acoustic feedback that instantly silenced every whisper in the room.
Tristan frowned, glancing down at me with a confused, slightly panicked smile. “Zoe, darling? Are you going to say a few words?”
“Yes, Tristan,” I said.
My voice wasn't shaking. It didn't tremble with emotion or crack with betrayal. It rang out through the grand ballroom with the cold, absolute clarity of a surgical laser.
“I do want to say a few words. Because tonight is a very special celebration. Not just for our upcoming wedding tomorrow... but for an acquisition that was recently finalized behind closed doors.”
Tristan’s smile twitched. A micro-expression of unease flashed across his handsome face. “Zoe, honey, maybe we save the corporate announcements for Monday’s board meeting—”
“Oh, this isn't a board meeting announcement, Tristan,” I interrupted smoothly, turning my body so I was facing him directly under the blinding glare of the crystal chandelier. “This is a personal thank-you.”
I reached into the pocket of my designer gown, pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, and held it up between my fingers for the entire room to see.
“For seven years, people whispered that Tristan Davis was the visionary genius who built Apex Biotech from the ground up,” I continued, my voice echoing off the marble walls. “And they were right about one thing: he is a master of fiction. A brilliant storyteller.”
A nervous titter rippled through the front row. One of the Sequoia partners cleared his throat.
“Zoe... what is this?” Tristan hissed under his breath, his hand tightening painfully around my waist. “Stop this right now. You’re making a scene.”
“A scene?” I smiled, looking straight into his wide, terrified eyes. “Tristan, darling, you haven't seen a scene yet.”

I turned toward the massive projection screen behind the bandstand—the screen that was supposed to be playing a montage of our romantic vacation photos in Maui.
“Arthur,” I said clearly into the microphone. “Play the reel.”
