Chapter 6 - The ResignationThe morning bell at the New York Stock Exchange had not yet rung, but the global press corps was already crammed into the primary auditorium of Sterling Tower. Cameras flashed, microphones bristled across the podium, and journalists shouted competing questions that bounced off the high glass walls.

Every major financial news network was broadcasting live.

“Breaking News: Sterling Enterprises announces an emergency press conference following days of intense regulatory scrutiny and rumored executive shakeups...”

At precisely 8:50 AM, the side door opened.

Evelyn walked out onto the stage.

She wore a classic white silk blouse and a sharp black pencil skirt. No heavy heirloom diamonds adorned her neck. No emerald velvet gown absorbed the light. Her posture was straight, her chin was high, and her face carried an expression of serene, unbreakable calm that silenced the auditorium instantly.

She stepped up to the podium, resting her hands lightly on either side of the microphone.

“Good morning,” Evelyn began, her voice carrying its signature, musical cadence, clear and steady across the massive room. “For over a decade, I have had the profound privilege of leading Sterling Enterprises through unprecedented growth, technological innovation, and global expansion.”

In the front row, Harrison looked bewildered, frantically whispering to Victoria, who simply stared at Evelyn in stunned silence.

“However,” Evelyn continued, pausing just long enough for the camera shutters to fire like machine guns, “true leadership is not measured by how long you can hold onto power, but by knowing when the architecture of the institution requires a new foundation.”

She took a slow, deep breath, looking directly into the primary camera lens that was broadcasting her face to millions of homes around the world.

“Effective immediately, I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Enterprises. Furthermore, I am transferring my controlling voting shares into a newly established independent trust dedicated to employee equity and technological ethics.”

Gasps echoed through the auditorium. Flashbulbs exploded in a blinding storm of white light. Reporters surged forward, shouting over each other in a frenzy of absolute disbelief.

“Ms. Sterling! Is this due to the federal whistle-blower investigation?”

“Are you facing criminal charges?”

“Who will take over the company?”

Evelyn raised a single hand. The auditorium quieted down, hypnotized by the sheer, effortless authority she still commanded without a single weapon of leverage.

“There are no criminal charges,” Evelyn said clearly, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of her lips—a smile the media had never seen in her entire career. “And as for my successor, the board has unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Arthur Vance as the new CEO of Sterling Enterprises.”

She stepped back from the podium, turned around, and walked off the stage through the side exit before the reporters even realized what had hit them.

She didn't look back. For the first time in her life, the glass cage was gone. And the world outside was wide open.
