Chapter 4 - The Boardroom CoupThe sun rising over the Manhattan skyline cast long, golden beams across the glass-and-steel monolith of Sterling Enterprises tower. But inside the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor, the atmosphere felt like the eye of a hurricane.

The emergency board of directors meeting had been called for 8:00 AM.
Twelve of the most powerful corporate executives in the country sat around the massive mahogany table in dead silence. At the head of the table sat Julian Sterling, looking pale, exhausted, and desperately trying to project an air of unshakeable authority despite the dark circles under his eyes.
“Let’s dispense with the theatrics,” Julian announced, slamming his pen onto the blotter. “My father is currently dealing with a... temporary misunderstanding involving a disgruntled former employee and local law enforcement. That does not change the fundamentals of this corporation. We vote today on the municipal transit bond, and we move forward.”
“We won't be voting on anything today, Julian,” a cool, commanding voice echoed from the doorway.
All heads snapped toward the entrance.
Victoria Sterling strode into the boardroom, wearing an immaculate charcoal suit. Walking right beside her—carrying a heavy leather briefcase with quiet, absolute confidence—was Elena Vance.
Julian sprang to his feet, his face twisting with rage. “What the hell is she doing in here?! Security! How did a disgraced waitress get past the lobby desk?!”
“I’m not a waitress, Julian,” Elena said, her voice cutting through the room with crystal clarity. She walked up to the head of the table, placed her briefcase down, and popped open the brass latches. “I’m the majority voting proxy for the Estate of Arthur Vance, and the newly appointed special auditor for Sterling Enterprises.”
Malcolm Reed, the senior corporate counsel and longtime fixer for the Sterling family, adjusted his glasses, standing up slowly.
“That’s absurd,” Malcolm scoffed, flashing a condescending smile at the board members. “The Vance woman has no standing in this corporation. This is a private board meeting. Security will escort—”
“Sit down, Malcolm, before you embarrass yourself further,” Victoria interrupted, sliding a thick legal document across the mahogany table toward the lead independent trustee. “As of 6:00 AM this morning, the State Attorney General issued a freezing order on all personal and corporate assets belonging to Arthur and Julian Sterling under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.”
The boardroom erupted into chaos.
Directors began shouting over one another, laptops snapping shut, papers flying as panic set in.
“You can’t do this!” Julian screamed, slamming his fists onto the table. “This company was built by my family! You’re destroying decades of work over a hysterical gold-digger’s fairy tale!”
Elena reached into her briefcase, pulled out her father’s engineering ledger, and dropped it squarely onto the center of the table right in front of Julian.
“My father didn't write fairy tales, Julian,” Elena said, her eyes locking onto his with unblinking intensity. “He wrote down every bridge you cut corners on, every safety violation you bribed inspectors to ignore, and every dollar you stole from the public trust. The federal marshals are downstairs right now with warrants for your arrest as an accessory to premeditated murder and corporate fraud.”

Julian stared at the ledger, his bravado instantly evaporating. He looked around the table for support, but every single board member was glaring at him with cold, calculating betrayal.
Without a word, Julian grabbed his jacket, turned on his heel, and bolted toward the private exit elevator, leaving the Sterling empire lying in ruins behind him.
