Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the ConservatoryThe conservatory of the Sterling estate was a lush sanctuary of towering ferns, exotic orchids, and filtered afternoon light pouring through a massive glass dome. It was Vanessa’s favorite room to escape to when the pressure of society life became too suffocating.

Today, however, it felt more like a cage.
Vanessa paced between the marble planters, her phone pressed tightly to her ear. Her voice was frantic, pitched high with panic as she yelled at her personal assistant on the other end of the line.
“I don't care what it costs, buy out the private clinic’s archives from twenty-five years ago! Shred them! Burn them if you have to!”
“You can burn the paper, Vanessa,” a cool, calm voice echoed from the arched entryway of the conservatory. “But you can’t burn the truth.”
Vanessa froze. Her phone slipped from her fingers, clattering softly against the flagstone floor before sliding beneath a massive fern frond.
Daniel stepped into the sunlight, his expression a mask of cold fury. He wasn't holding a phone or a folder; he was holding a certified DNA testing kit—the exact one Miller had pulled from Emily’s locker that morning.
“You knew,” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling as she backed away until her shoulders hit the glass wall of the conservatory. “You went behind my back.”
“I went looking for answers because my fiancée is a criminal who frames innocent women in my foyer,” Daniel said, his steps deliberate and measured as he closed the distance between them. “Only I didn't find a common thief. I found a massive, twenty-five-year-old fraud. You’re not a Hart by blood, Vanessa. You’re the swapped child of a desperate nurse. And Emily is the rightful heir to the estate and the fortune you’ve been parading around in.”
Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh, her eyes flashing with a desperate, cornered malice.
“Rightful heir?” she spat, her aristocratic facade finally cracking completely to reveal the terrified, insecure girl hiding underneath. “You think some working-class nobody who spends her days scrubbing floors deserves the life I built? Do you think society cares about biological accidents? I earned my place! I worked for years to secure our merger, our status, our future! Emily is a ghost from a past I buried!”
“She’s your sister, Vanessa!” Daniel roared, his voice shaking the delicate orchids on the nearby shelves. “She didn't come here to ruin you. She didn't blackmail you. She just wanted to know who she was. And you tried to destroy her life—you framed her for theft, you humiliated her, you slapped her across the face—just to protect your precious social standing!”
Vanessa stared at him, her chest heaving, tears of pure rage spilling over her perfectly sculpted cheeks. She realized the game was over. The media was going to have a field day. The Hart family name would be dragged through the mud. Her wedding to Daniel—the crown jewel of her social conquest—was dead in the water.
“You’re going to cancel the wedding,” Vanessa said flatly, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper.
May you like
“The wedding was over the moment you raised your hand against an innocent woman in my home,” Daniel replied coldly. “Pack your bags, Vanessa. You have twenty-four hours to clear your things out of this estate before I hand these files directly to the district attorney.”
With that, Daniel turned on his heel and walked out of the conservatory, leaving Vanessa alone among the orchids, a queen sitting on a throne of ash.
