Chapter 7 - The Garden in Full BloomTwo years later, the estate looked entirely different—and entirely alive.

The dark, oppressive energy that used to haunt the hallways during Gavin’s tenure was completely gone, replaced by the bright, chaotic, joyful noise of a home filled with genuine love and laughter.
My botanical business, Verdant Roots, had expanded into a premier ecological design studio, employing a dozen talented agronomists and landscape artists across San Diego County. We specialized in restoring native Californian habitats and designing sustainable urban sanctuaries for modern homes—turning forgotten spaces into thriving ecosystems.
On a bright Saturday morning in May, the grand lawn was set up for a celebration.
There were no formal corporate guests, no superficial socialites, and no toxic in-laws. Just close friends, family, and the people who had stood by us through the storm.
Underneath a soaring white canopy draped with hanging eucalyptus garlands and cascading white orchids, Julian and I stood before a small gathering of loved ones to exchange vows.
Isabelle, now five years old and wearing a flower crown made of fresh daisies, served as our official ring bearer, clutching a polished wooden box with solemn, joyful concentration.
When Julian slid a simple platinum band onto my finger, I didn't feel the cautious hesitation or the quiet fear that had marked my first wedding. I felt grounded, secure, and completely free.
"You may kiss the bride," the officiant smiled.
As Julian pulled me close and kissed me under the warm California sun, the applause of our family rang out across the lawn, harmonizing with the cheerful chirping of birds nesting in the olive trees we had planted together two years ago.
Later that evening, after the guests had departed and Isabelle was fast asleep upstairs, I walked out to my greenhouse one last time.
The glass walls were cool against the evening air, but inside, the tropical sanctuary was a lush, breathing masterpiece. The Monstera Albo I had repotted years ago had grown massive, its fenestrated leaves stretching proudly toward the ceiling lights.
Julian stepped in behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin softly on my shoulder.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Vance?" he whispered, smiling against my neck.
I reached up, placing my hand over his, and looked out over the sea of vibrant, thriving green that surrounded us.
May you like
"I was just thinking," I smiled softly, "that some plants only truly bloom after you cut away everything that was holding them back."
Julian chuckled, tightening his embrace as we stood together in the heart of our sanctuary, watching the night bloom around us.
