Chapter 5 - The Downfall and the ScrambleWithin twenty minutes of Marcus Vance’s public announcement, the glittering gala had transformed into a scene of catastrophic corporate panic.

The wealthy donors and foundation trustees who had spent the evening flattering Ethan Bennett were now aggressively avoiding eye contact with him. City officials, terrified of being tainted by an impending federal fraud investigation, excused themselves to their cars before their names could be associated with the sinking ship.

Ethan stood frozen in the center of the emptying ballroom, his phone vibrating incessantly in his breast pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen was a relentless stream of notifications: Margin call on corporate stock. Bank freezing operational lines. Board of Directors calling an emergency vote.

He looked up, wild-eyed, searching the room for Charlotte, but she and Marcus had already vanished through the grand exit, leaving behind a wake of stunned silence and whispered gossip.

Vanessa Cole was the first to snap under the pressure.

"This is a disaster," Vanessa hissed, her glossy waves coming undone as she glared at Ethan with pure fury. "Your wife just destroyed you! And the worst part is, she destroyed us!"

Ethan, his face grey with shock and exhaustion, snapped out of his daze. "Shut up, Vanessa. This wouldn't have happened if you hadn't humiliated her in front of three hundred people! Why did you have to pour that wine?"

"Me?" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the ornate ceilings of the empty ballroom. "You told me to do it! You laughed when I said she looked like a wet mouse! You said she wouldn't do a damn thing because she was too pathetic to fight back!"

"Well, she wasn't pathetic, was she?!" Ethan roared, finally losing his temper as he shoved past her toward the exit. "She owned the majority shares all along! She let me play king while she held the mortgage on my entire life!"

He ran out into the grand lobby, but Charlotte was already gone, driven away in a black town car that dissolved into the rainy Chicago night.

By Monday morning, the fallout was absolute.

The headlines across every major business and gossip publication in the Midwest screamed the news:

REAL ESTATE MOGUL ETHAN BENNETT FACES FEDERAL FRAUD PROBE AFTER HIGH-SOCIETY DIVORCE EXPLOSION.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EMPIRE: CHARLOTTE BENNETT STEPS OUT IN RED AND RECLAIMS HER THRONE.

Stocks in Lakeside Development plummeted by forty percent within the first hour of trading. The Board of Directors, presented with the forensic audit provided by Marcus Vance, voted unanimously to strip Ethan of his CEO title and lock him out of corporate headquarters. His personal credit cards were declined at lunch, his luxury apartment was placed under court-ordered receivership, and Vanessa Cole—realizing that Ethan was suddenly penniless, disgraced, and radioactive—blocked his number, packed her designer bags, and fled to Miami with a wealthy venture capitalist she had met at the very same gala.

Ethan Bennett, who had believed he was the master of Chicago’s high society, found himself sitting alone in a sterile conference room with a court-appointed public defender, realizing the brutal truth of what his ex-wife had told him:

She built him. And she had dismantled him in a single night.
