Chapter 4 - The Trojan Horse in the BoardroomThe encrypted flash drive hummed softly as I plugged it into the isolated terminal in my private study.

I didn't run the drive through our corporate network. I used an offline, military-grade sandbox environment designed to detonate malicious code, malware, or spyware before it could infect my files.
Within seconds, a single encrypted file folder appeared on the screen: SLOANE_EXPOSURE_MASTER.iso
I double-clicked the file, entering my personal decryption key.
The screen instantly populated with a cascading waterfall of financial spreadsheets, audio recordings, scanned legal documents, and high-resolution photographs. I started opening files at random, my blood running colder with every click.
These weren't just corporate documents. These were confidential, highly sensitive financial audits of Sloane Infrastructure’s most secretive offshore accounts—accounts that only myself, our chief financial officer, and Vanessa Vale had authorized access to.
Worse still, I found a series of scanned wire-transfer receipts totaling over forty-five million dollars, funneled out of our development trust fund over the past eight months and routed through a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Vanguard Holdings.
The exact same shell company mentioned in the financial forensics report of my corporate enemies.
I clicked on an audio file dated three weeks ago.
I hit play.
The tinny sound of a digital recording filled the quiet study. It was a conversation between two voices in a private conference room—voices I recognized instantly.
The first voice belonged to Marcus Vance—no relation to Vanessa, but rather our senior vice president of legal compliance.
“...if Mason finds out we’ve been quietly siphoning the waterfront development funds into Vanguard, he’ll have our heads on spikes,” Marcus’s voice sounded tense, nervous.
Then came the second voice—calm, confident, and chillingly cold.
“Mason won’t find out anything until it’s too late,” Vanessa Vale replied smoothly. “Once the merger goes through next month, his signature will automatically bind the company to the restructured debt. He’ll take the fall for the embezzlement, the board will oust him for financial negligence, and by the time he realizes what hit him, he won't even have enough money left to pay his lawyers.”
“And what about his wife?” Marcus asked hesitatingly. “Claire has been asking questions about the quarterly audit discrepancies. She’s smarter than people give her credit for.”
Vanessa let out a low, mocking laugh. “Claire won’t be a problem much longer. I’ve already arranged for a little... adjustment to her daily routine. By the time the babies are born, she’ll be entirely out of the picture, and Mason will be too grief-stricken and legally cornered to fight back.”
The audio file cut off with a soft click.
I sat frozen in my executive leather chair, the glow of the monitor casting harsh blue shadows across my face.
Every muscle in my body trembled, not with fear, but with an incandescent, violent rage.
She hadn't just been stealing from my company. She had been systematically plotting to frame me for corporate fraud, ruin my reputation, and murder my wife—all so she could seize control of Sloane Infrastructure Group and step into the vacuum of my ruined life.
My phone vibrated violently on the desk.
I snatched it up. Caller ID flashed: St. Catherine’s ICU – Dr. Bennett.
I swiped answer instantly, my voice cracking despite my best efforts. "Adrian? Is she awake?"
"Mason, you need to get back to the hospital immediately," Dr. Bennett’s voice was frantic, drowned out by the background noise of alarms chiming and nurses shouting down the corridor. "Claire’s vitals just crashed. Her heart rate plummeted, and she's gone into acute cardiac arrest. We're fighting to resuscitate her right now!"
The phone slipped from my fingers, clattering against the hardwood floor.

My world tilted off its axis.
I didn't walk out of the study; I ran like a madman, bursting through the front doors of the estate, jumping into my black armored SUV, and burning rubber down the Mercer Island bridge toward the hospital, ready to tear down the gates of hell itself to save my wife.
