Chapter 5 - The Trap is SprungWithin an hour, the Moretti estate was placed on absolute lockdown. Heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the ground-floor windows, cutting off the rainy Long Island night, and armed guards in tactical gear took up positions at every corridor junction.

Alessandro marched into the archive room where I was hurriedly packing Emma’s coloring books into a bag. He grabbed my shoulders, his dark eyes burning with fierce urgency.
"Annie, listen to me," Alessandro commanded, his voice shaking slightly—not with fear, but with controlled fury. "The Falcones aren't here for money or territory. They know about Marco's safe. They believe it's hidden somewhere in this wing. They're coming for us."
"Where do we go?" I asked, my voice trembling as I scooped Emma up into my arms.
"My panic room," Alessandro said, guiding us toward the far corner of the archive. He pressed a sequence of hidden brass studs carved into the molding of a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. With a low, pneumatic hiss, a section of the heavy oak shelving swung inward, revealing a descending staircase illuminated by soft emergency lighting. "Get inside. Lock the steel door behind you. Do not open it for anyone—do not even open it if you hear my voice—unless I give you the specific passcode: St. Jude."
"What about you?" I asked, grabbing the lapel of his shirt, panic clawing at my throat. "Alessandro, you can't fight an entire hit squad by yourself!"
"I'm not fighting them by myself," Alessandro said, a dark, dangerous smile playing across his lips. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing my cheek in a fleeting, tender caress. "I've been waiting fourteen months for the Falcones to crawl out of their holes and step onto my turf. Tonight, they walk into my slaughterhouse."
Before I could protest, he gently pushed Emma and me into the reinforced concrete vault, sealing the heavy steel door shut with a resounding, final clank.
Inside the panic room, it was warm and well-lit, equipped with monitors displaying live security feeds from every corner of the mansion. I set Emma down on a comfortable leather sofa, pulling her close as we stared at the wall of screens.
On monitor three, I watched Alessandro walk calmly down the main hallway of the west wing, his pistol raised, standing completely out in the open.
"Come on out, boys," Alessandro called out into the empty corridor, his voice echoing through the estate's intercom system. "I know you're looking for the safe. Why don't we discuss it face-to-face?"
From the shadows of the ceiling rafters, two men in black tactical gear dropped silently onto the Persian carpet, raising their weapons.
What followed was a masterclass in controlled violence. Alessandro moved with terrifying speed—dodging a hail of silenced gunfire, pivoting, and taking down the first intruder with a precise shot to the shoulder before disarming the second with a brutal, sweeping kick that sent his weapon clattering across the floor.
More guards—loyal Moretti loyalists stationed throughout the estate—poured into the corridor from the stairwells, overwhelming the infiltrating hit squad in seconds.
By the time the smoke cleared, three Falcone operatives were zip-tied and kneeling on the hallway floor, bleeding and subdued.
Alessandro stood over them, his breathing steady, holstering his weapon. He looked directly up at the security camera lens connected to our panic room, knowing I was watching. He offered a brief, reassuring nod.
Then, he walked over to the central archive wall where the old portrait of his grandfather hung, reached behind the heavy gilded frame, and pulled forward a concealed lever.

With a deep, grinding groan that shook the foundations of the house, the true wall panel slid open.
Inside sat Marco’s legendary safe—intact, untouched, and holding the secrets that would destroy every corrupt syndicate leader from New York to Chicago.
