Chapter 1 - The Descent into the AbyssThe air inside the dark, oppressive basement of the Gotti family estate tasted of damp concrete, rust, and the lingering, suffocating ghost of confinement. When I first pulled open the iron-reinforced door of the old mastiff cage, the dim overhead bulb flickered to life, casting a sickly yellow illumination over a nightmare I never could have imagined in my worst, most paranoid fever dreams.

There she was.

Sofia. My wife. The woman I had left four months ago glowing with life, carrying our firstborn son beneath her heart. Now, she was huddled in the far corner of the iron enclosure, her frail body reduced to skin and bone, wrapped in a threadbare, dirt-stained blanket. Her once-lustrous dark hair was tangled into hard mats, her cheeks were hollowed out, and her lips were cracked and bleeding from severe dehydration.

When the bright light hit her eyes, she flinched violently, lifting a trembling, skeletal hand to shield her face.

“John…?” Her voice was barely a dry rattle, scraping across her throat like dry leaves dragged over gravel. “Is… is it really you, or am I dreaming this again?”

The sound of her voice broke something vital and unbreakable inside my chest. A hot, blinding wave of absolute rage surged through my veins, instantly freezing into a cold, lethal clarity that had kept me alive through a decade of brutal turf wars across Europe. But this wasn't business. This was my blood. This was my sanctuary, poisoned from the inside out.

I dropped to my knees, ignoring the sharp gravel biting into my skin, and gripped the cold iron bars of the cage.

“It’s me, Sofia. I’m here. You’re safe now,” I choked out, the words tearing past my throat. I reached my hands through the narrow gaps, grabbing her ice-cold, trembling fingers and pulling them against my face. “I am so sorry. God forgive me, I am so sorry.”

Sofia let out a ragged, heartbreaking sob, leaning her forehead against the iron bars as tears cut clean tracks through the grime on her cheeks. “Your mother… she told me you traded us away, John. She said you found someone else in Europe, that you ordered her to lock me away like an animal so I wouldn't ruin your political ambitions. She said you never wanted this baby.”

The words hit me like physical blows to my chest. My mother. The woman who had birthed me, the woman to whom I had entrusted my entire world while I crossed an ocean to secure our family's empire.

“She lied,” I whispered, my voice trembling with a fury so dense it felt heavy in my lungs. “She told me you ran away. She left your wedding ring in the nursery crib to make me think you abandoned our child.”

Sofia shook her head weakly, her eyes widening with a sudden, panicked realization. “The baby, John… he’s coming. The stress, the lack of food… I think he’s coming tonight.”

Panic, sharp and immediate, short-circuited every other emotion. I gripped the heavy brass padlock securing the cage door, but it was anchored into reinforced steel. Without the master key, breaking it would take time we simply didn't have.

“Hold on, Sofia,” I ordered, standing up with a sudden, explosive burst of adrenaline. “I’m getting you out of here right now.”

I sprinted up the concrete basement stairs two at a time, bursting into the grand, silent kitchen of the mansion where my mother sat serenely at the mahogany table, sipping her evening tea as if she were waiting for a casual guest to arrive for dinner.
