Chapter 5 - The Safe HavenWhen I opened my eyes next, the harsh fluorescent glare of the warehouse was gone.

Instead, I was staring up at a vaulted white ceiling framed by dark mahogany beams. The sheets beneath me were made of the softest Egyptian cotton I had ever touched, smelling faintly of cedarwood and clean linen. My wrists were neatly bandaged with sterile gauze, and a cool, damp cloth rested gently across my forehead.

I tried to sit up, but a sharp ache rippled through my torso.

"Don't move too fast," a deep voice rumbled from the corner of the room.

I turned my head. Roman sat in a high-backed leather armchair beside the oversized window, watching the sunrise break over the Baltimore Harbor. He had removed his tactical sweater, wearing only a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the scars and muscles of a man who had fought a hundred invisible wars.

"Mr. Calder..." I croaked, my voice sounding like gravel.

"Roman," he corrected gently, standing up and walking over to the bed. He poured a glass of ice water from a silver pitcher on the nightstand, holding it out for me. I took it with trembling hands, drinking deeply as the cool liquid revived my burning throat.

"Where... where are we?" I asked, looking around the expansive, luxurious penthouse suite.

"My private residence," Roman replied, pulling up a chair beside the bed. "Secure. Isolated. No one gets in without my direct authorization."

Memory slammed back into me like a freight train. "Caleb! Is he—?"

"He’s fine, Elena," Roman interrupted, a faint, reassuring smile touching his lips. "He’s currently eating his third stack of blueberry pancakes prepared by my head chef, completely unaware of anything except that his favorite cartoon is on television. My security detail brought him here three hours ago. He has a room right down the hall."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "Thank God... thank you, Roman."

Roman watched me cry for a moment, his expression filled with a quiet, heavy emotion that seemed entirely out of place for a mafia boss. He reached out, his warm, calloused thumb gently wiping away a tear rolling down my cheek.

"You saved my empire, Elena," he said quietly. "You found the ledger, you secured the cloud backup, and you took the fall without breaking. I owe you everything."

"I just wanted to protect my brother," I whispered.

"And you did," Roman said, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine with fierce intensity. "From now on, neither of you will ever have to look over your shoulder again. Evelyn’s network has been dismantled root and branch. Victor Cruz tried to make a move on our shipping lanes this morning in retaliation, and my men intercepted his convoy before they even hit the county line. The war is over before it started."

He paused, his fingers lingering near my cheek for a second longer than necessary.

"And as for you... I don't intend to let you go back to cleaning kitchens or worrying about rent."

I looked up at him, my heart doing a strange, dangerous flip in my chest. "What do you mean?"

"I mean," Roman said, a slow, predatory yet tender smile spreading across his face, "I need a partner. Someone I can actually trust. Someone who isn't afraid to stand up to me when I'm being an impossible bastard."

Before I could process his words, a cheerful knock sounded on the bedroom door, followed immediately by the door swinging open.

"Elena!"

Caleb burst into the room, sprinting across the plush rug in his dinosaur pajamas, throwing his arms around my neck with reckless abandon. I gasped, hugging him back tightly, burying my face in his messy curls as if anchoring myself to reality.

"You're okay! You're really okay!" Caleb cried happily, pulling back and looking at my bandaged wrists. "Mr. Calder told me you were on a secret mission for the company!"

May you like

I looked past Caleb toward the doorway. Roman was standing there, leaning against the frame with his hands in his pockets, watching us with a look of profound, aching contentment that completely transformed his harsh features.

"A very secret mission, bug," I whispered, kissing the top of Caleb's head. "And it's finally over."
