Chapter 1 - The Weight of the CoatThe charcoal wool of Daniel Carver’s suit jacket felt unnaturally heavy over my shoulders.

It smelled faint of sandalwood, cold rain, and expensive tobacco. But beneath those subtle scents lay something else—the silent, absolute authority of a man whose order could raise a empire or level a city block in a single night.

My body trembled violently, not just from the sharp, shooting pains pulsing through my lower abdomen, but from the sudden, terrifying shift in the air.

Forty pairs of eyes, previously bright with petty amusement, were now wide with pure, unadulterated terror. Champagne flutes trembled in manicured hands.

"Daniel!" Claire’s voice cracked, losing its polished aristocratic ring. She took a step toward him, her emerald silk dress rustling against the pristine marble. "She is a servant! She was insolent! I was simply asserting authority before our guests arrive—"

"Our guests are here, Claire," Daniel said, his voice dangerously soft as he wrapped a strong, calloused hand firmly around my elbow to steady me. He didn't even look at her. "And every single one of them just witnessed you commit an assault under my roof."

"Assault?!" Claire gasped, letting out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "It’s hair, Daniel! It grows back! She's a nobody!"

Daniel finally turned his head. His dark gray eyes were as flat and cold as a frozen lake in mid-winter.

"Nothing beneath this roof is a nobody," Daniel stated calmly. "Least of all her."

He looked down at me, his gaze softening by a fraction of a degree. "Can you walk, Hannah?"

"I... I think so," I managed to whisper, clutching his lapels with my trembling fingers. Another contraction slammed into my back, making me gasp for air. "Daniel... the baby..."

"I know," he murmured gently.

Without hesitation, the most feared mafia boss in Providence bent down, slid one arm beneath my knees, the other behind my back, and lifted me effortlessly into his arms.

A collective, audible gasp echoed across the grand ballroom.

Claire stood frozen, her jaw slightly open, as Daniel carried me—a seven-month-pregnant maid in a stained black uniform—past her, past the senators, the union bosses, and the syndicate lieutenants, heading straight toward the grand staircase.

"Martin!" Daniel called out over his shoulder.

Old Martin Hale stepped forward from the shadows near the pantry doors, his face stoic, though his gray eyes burned with a quiet, fierce satisfaction. "Yes, Mr. Carver?"

"Clear the ballroom," Daniel ordered without stopping. "The engagement party is canceled. Have Marcus lock the gates. No one leaves the estate grounds until I give the word."

"Daniel, you can't do this!" Claire screamed behind us, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "My father controls the harbor shipping lanes! If you humiliate me like this, the Whitlock family will break the alliance!"

May you like

Daniel paused at the third step of the grand staircase. He turned his head slightly, looking down at Claire with a cold, terrifying smile.

"Tell your father," Daniel said quietly, "that I am counting on it."
