Chapter 6 - The First SaturdayTwo weeks later.

The family visitation center downtown was a bright, cheerful room filled with colorful foam blocks, wooden train sets, and cheerful pastel murals painted across the walls.

I stood nervously near the corner of the carpet, wearing a clean, pressed button-down shirt and navy slacks, my hair neatly combed. My hands were sweating. I hadn't been this nervous before a corporate board presentation in my entire life.

The door to the hallway opened.

A social worker stepped inside, holding the tiny, chubby hand of a nine-month-old baby girl wearing a yellow sundress with little white daisies.

Hope.

She looked taller, her dark curls bouncing as she walked cautiously across the room. When her big, bright eyes landed on me, she paused, tilting her head with innocent curiosity.

I dropped to my knees, my breath catching in my throat.

“Hey, sweetheart,” I choked out, my voice thick with emotion as I held my arms open wide. “Do you remember Daddy?”

Hope stared at me for a second, her little face scrunching up. Then, a massive, toothy grin spread across her cheeks. She let go of the social worker’s hand and toddled clumsily across the rug straight into my arms.

I caught her, wrapping my arms tightly around her small body, burying my face in her soft curls as hot tears streamed down my face. She giggled, patting my cheek with her warm, sticky little hand.

I held her close, realizing with absolute, overwhelming clarity that while I could never undo the past, while I could never erase the damage I had caused, I had been given a second chance at what truly mattered.

Standing near the doorway, half-hidden in the hallway shadows, Claire watched us.

She held a diaper bag over her shoulder, her expression soft and quiet. When she caught me looking over at her, she gave a gentle, approving nod.

She didn't step inside. She gave us our space.

Because she knew, and I knew, that the road back to earning true respect would be long, difficult, and earned one small step at a time.
