Chapter 6 - The Final ConfrontationTwo heavy-duty black SUVs blocked the entrance of the barn, their high-beam headlights blindingly bright, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air like falling stars.

The driver-side doors of both vehicles opened in unison.

Four men stepped out, dressed in identical charcoal-grey suits, moving with the practiced, predatory precision of corporate enforcers. But it was the fifth man who stepped out from the back seat of the lead vehicle that made Logan’s blood run cold.

Victor Vance.

At sixty years old, Vance possessed the silver hair of a statesman and the cold, dead eyes of a shark. He walked slowly toward the open barn door, leaning slightly on an ebony cane with a gold-plated handle, flanked by two armed security contractors.

“Well, well, well,” Vance’s voice echoed smoothly across the concrete floor, dripping with condescension. “Family reunions are always so touching. Dr. Wright’s son, playing farmer in the middle of nowhere, reunited with his little diner waitress and a brand-new taxpayer liability.”

Logan scrambled to his feet, instantly shielding Joanna and the baby behind his back. His eyes darted around the barn, searching for an escape route, but the rear emergency exit was chained shut from the outside.

“Vance,” Logan snarled, his voice vibrating with pure, unadulterated venom. “Leave them alone. They have nothing to do with Vanguard. The patents are yours! I signed the non-disclosure agreements! I gave you everything!”

“You gave me intellectual property, Logan,” Vance replied, stopping ten feet away, smiling a cold, mirueless smile. “But loose ends have a habit of fraying. A child carrying the Wright genetic code? A legal heir who could legally challenge corporate forfeiture petitions when he turns eighteen? That’s not a loose end, my boy. That’s a corporate liability.”

Vance gestured lazily with his cane toward the two enforcers beside him. “Retrieve the child. Clean up the paperwork.”

The two enforcers unclipped their holsters, stepping forward in unison.

Joanna gasped, clutching little Robert tighter against her chest, stepping backward until her back hit the cold metal fender of a tractor.

“Over my dead body,” Logan hissed, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. He lunged forward, tackling the lead enforcer around the waist just as the man drew his weapon.

The two men crashed hard onto the concrete floor, a tangle of limbs and grunts. The second enforcer raised his sidearm, taking dead aim at Logan’s back.

“Logan!” Joanna screamed.

Before the enforcer could pull the trigger, the piercing wail of police sirens split the night air from the highway outside.

Red and blue emergency lights suddenly flashed across the open farmland, strobing through the barn windows in a chaotic rhythm. Headlights of three unmarked state police cruisers swung into the gravel drive, their tires sliding to a halt behind Vance’s SUVs.

A megaphone blared from the lead cruiser.

“FBI AND PENNSYLVANIA STATE POLICE! FEDERAL WARRANTS ISSUED FOR VICTOR VANCE. DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND INTERLOCK YOUR FINGERS BEHIND YOUR HEADS!”

Vance’s face twisted in sudden, furious disbelief. He whipped his head around toward the highway.

Stepping out of the passenger seat of the lead federal cruiser, leaning heavily on a cane, was Dr. Robert Wright—flanked by two federal agents in tactical gear.

“You’re too late, Robert!” Vance shouted over the sirens, waving his cane angrily. “Your warrants are tied up in corporate injunctions! This property is private industrial land!”

“Not anymore, Victor,” Robert called out steadily, his voice carrying clearly across the yard. “Thirty minutes ago, the federal attorney general unsealed the grand jury indictments for corporate extortion, racketeering, and the involuntary manslaughter of my eldest son. And the automated data-dump I transmitted from my office server just handed the DOJ full ownership of Vanguard Diagnostics.”

Vance froze, his cane slipping slightly against the gravel.

The federal agents didn't wait for him to recover. They swarmed forward with professional speed, forcing Vance’s enforcers to drop their weapons and slamming them against the hoods of the SUVs. Two agents grabbed Vance by both arms, snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists with a decisive click.

As Vance was shoved into the back of a cruiser, glaring daggers through the window at Robert, the nightmare that had held the Wright family hostage for a decade finally came to an end.
