Chapter 4 - The Midnight ConfessionThe sheer force of Ethan’s grip sent a jolt of cold terror straight down my spine.

I didn't try to pull away. I knew that if I panicked, if I screamed, the sleeping nurse in the next room would wake up, and the fragile window of truth we had just opened would shatter forever.
"Ethan," I whispered, placing my free hand over his clenched fist. Her skin felt burning hot, his pulse racing beneath his palm. "Look at me. You're safe. You're in your room. The car is gone."
His wild, disoriented gaze slowly focused on my face. The panic in his dark eyes began to recede, replaced by a deep, agonizing confusion. He looked at my hand, then up at my eyes, his grip on my wrist loosening slightly but never letting go.
"Who..." he rasped, his throat clicking with the effort. "Who are you?"
"I'm Claire," I said quietly, leaning closer so he wouldn't have to strain. "Claire Cross. Well... Claire Thornton now. I'm your wife, Ethan."
He blinked, the word wife registering like a foreign concept. "My... wife? I don't... I don't know you."
"Your grandmother, Vivian, married us three weeks ago," I explained quickly, keeping an eye on the door. "The family trust... they needed you to have a spouse before your thirtieth birthday, or Jason would take control of the Thornton Group. My father... he sold me into this. But I'm not on their side, Ethan. I know what they're doing to you."
Ethan’s jaw tightened. The mention of Jason's name seemed to act like a spark in his frozen mind. "The sedative... Sterling... they've been keeping me down."
"Yes," I nodded. "I just lowered the dose on the IV pump. But we don't have much time. Dr. Sterling will notice the chemical levels in your blood during his next check. You said Jason cut the brakes. The accident... nine months ago. Was it him?"
Ethan closed his eyes, a grimace of pure pain crossing his face as the memories flooded back. "I was driving... to the cabin in upstate. The steering went loose on the mountain pass. The car... it went over the ridge. I remember the smell of gasoline... and Jason standing at the top of the road, just watching the car burn."
A cold sweat broke out across my forehead. It wasn't just a corporate takeover. It was attempted murder. And the man who had done it was currently sleeping under the same roof.
"He's been trying to finish the job ever since," I said, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place. "The 'neurological decay' Sterling diagnosed... it's a slow-acting poison disguised as medical treatment. If you die of natural organ failure from the sedatives, no one looks at Jason."
Ethan opened his eyes again, his gaze turning fierce, desperate. "The trust... Claire. The papers. In the study... behind the portrait of my grandfather. There is a hidden safe. The real will... the one my father wrote before he died... it strips Jason of any claim if I am incapacitated. Vivian knows... she's hiding it to protect the family name."
"Vivian is protecting Jason?" I asked, shocked.
"She doesn't care about Jason," Ethan muttered, his voice growing weaker as the residual drugs in his system fought to pull him back under. "She cares about... the Thornton name. If the world learns a Thornton tried to murder a Thornton, the stock crashes. She'd rather keep me asleep and Jason on a leash than destroy the empire."
The cold, calculating cruelty of the Thornton family made my stomach churn. They were willing to sacrifice Ethan’s life just to keep their corporate stock stable.
"I’ll find the papers, Ethan," I promised, squeezing his hand. "I’ll get the proof."
His eyes began to heavy again, his grip on my wrist finally releasing as his hand fell limp against the sheets. "Be careful... Claire. Jason... he’s desperate. If he realizes you know... he won't hesitate to do to you... what he did to me."
"Sleep now," I whispered, tears stinging my eyes. "Fight the drug. I’ll protect us."
I quickly reset the IV pump to its original parameters, erasing the digital trail of my tampering. I slipped out of the room, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
As I walked back down the dark corridor, a shadow moved at the end of the hall.
I froze, pressing my back against the cold wallpaper.

Jason was standing by the top of the grand staircase, a phone pressed to his ear. His voice was low, but in the dead silence of the mansion, the words carried perfectly.
"Yeah, it's me," Jason muttered into the receiver. "Sterling says the heart is starting to show signs of strain from the new dosage. It won't be long now. Just make sure the offshore account is ready. Once the wife is taken care of, we close the deal."
