Chapter 5 - The Heir's RetributionThree weeks after Charlotte’s reclamation of the boardroom, the fallout had sent shockwaves through the entire financial district.

Arthur Sterling sat in a maximum-security federal holding facility awaiting trial, his appeals for bail repeatedly denied as millions in hidden offshore assets were systematically repatriated to the Solmere Foundation. Victor Vance had cut a plea deal, turning state’s evidence against his co-conspirators in exchange for a reduced sentence, exposing a vast network of political bribes and real estate fraud.
And Alicia Sterling?
Alicia had discovered what it truly meant to be an outsider in the world she once ruled. With her father’s accounts frozen, her society friends instantly developed selective memory, ignoring her phone calls and uninviting her from every charity gala and private club in the city. Her three-thousand-dollar white silk dresses couldn't shield her from the reality of pending civil lawsuits and criminal negligence charges filed by Charlotte’s legal team for the physical assault in the hotel lobby.
On a rainy Friday afternoon, Alicia walked through the grand revolving doors of the Solmere Hotel.
She wasn't wearing white silk anymore. She wore a simple, oversized black raincoat, her face devoid of makeup, her eyes red and swollen from days of hysterical panic. She had come to beg.
She bypassed the front desk, ignoring the stares of the bellboys, and marched straight toward the private elevator bank leading to the executive penthouse.
“Excuse me, ma’am—private floors require an executive keycard,” a security guard stepped forward, blocking her path.
“I need to see Charlotte Vale!” Alicia shrieked, her voice cracking with desperation as several guests turned to stare. “Tell her Alicia Sterling is here! She has to talk to me! My father’s lawyers are incompetent—she’s destroying our family!”
“Mrs. Sterling,” a calm, resonant voice echoed from behind the marble pillar.
Alicia spun around.
Charlotte stood there, wearing a sleek emerald-green trench coat, holding a leather portfolio. She looked every inch the billionaire heiress—composed, untouchable, and radiating an effortless power that made Alicia look like a frightened ghost.
“Charlotte,” Alicia choked out, taking two desperate steps forward before stopping as two security guards flanked the heiress. “Please... drop the criminal assault charges. Drop the civil lawsuits. My father is an old man—he won't survive ten years in a federal penitentiary. We’ll... we’ll leave the country. We’ll never step foot in this city again.”
Charlotte walked slowly toward her, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor—the exact same floor where Alicia had dragged her by the hair just three weeks ago.
When Charlotte stopped, only two feet separated them.
“When you dragged me across this floor, Alicia,” Charlotte said, her voice dropping into a soft, terrifying whisper, “you told me that people like me didn't belong in places like this.”
Alicia flinched, tears spilling over her eyelashes. “I was arrogant... I didn't know who you were—”
“That’s the funniest part, Alicia,” Charlotte interrupted, tilting her head with a cold, unforgiving smile. “You thought you were attacking a poor, defenseless girl with no name and no power. You didn't care about the truth, the law, or human decency. You only cared about power.”
Charlotte lifted her hand—not to strike, but to adjust the collar of her coat with deliberate slowness.
“The charges against your father will proceed according to the law,” Charlotte continued steadily. “The civil lawsuits recovering the stolen funds will proceed down to the last penny. And as for you... you are permanently banned from every property, hotel, and restaurant owned by the Solmere Empire, anywhere in the world.”

Alicia stared at her, the last remnants of her aristocratic pride shattering completely. She fell to her knees right there in the lobby, burying her face in her hands as silent, bitter sobs shook her shoulders.
Charlotte didn't look back as she stepped past her, walking toward the private elevator. The lobby remained silent, watching the rightful owner ascend to her throne.
