Chapter 4 - The Miami LandingThree hundred miles away, under the brilliant turquoise skies of Miami, Ethan Caldwell stepped off the private charter jet into the humid Florida warmth, feeling like a king.

He wore a custom linen suit, sunglasses perched casually on his nose, and carried his phone in his hand as he walked down the tarmac toward the private VIP lounge where Tessa was waiting.
Everything was falling into place.
By the time he landed back in Boston on Monday morning, the corporate coup would be complete. Amelia would be locked away in a private sanitarium under the fabricated medical orders his mother had arranged, Hartwell Designs would be safely merged with Richard Jr.’s offshore syndicate, and he would be free to marry Tessa, acknowledge his newborn child, and step into billionaire status without ever having to file a messy, expensive divorce.
His phone buzzed in his hand.
Thinking it was his father confirming that the board meeting had successfully stripped me of my voting rights, Ethan swiped the screen with a confident smirk.
It wasn't his father.
It was an automated alert from the federal bankruptcy court in Boston.
Emergency Injunction: All personal and corporate assets belonging to Ethan Caldwell, Margaret Caldwell, and Richard Caldwell Sr. have been frozen pursuant to an ongoing criminal investigation for wire fraud, money laundering, and identity falsification.
Ethan stopped dead in the middle of the tarmac. The smug smile froze on his face.
“What the hell is this?” he muttered, tapping frantically on the screen to open the legal document attached to the alert.
Before he could read past the first paragraph, his phone began ringing violently.
Caller ID: Mother.
Ethan swiped to answer, pressing the phone to his ear. “Mom! What is going on? I just got an alert—”
“Ethan! Get back here immediately!” Margaret’s voice shrieked through the speaker, completely stripped of its usual refined composure, sounding like a terrified animal trapped in a corner. “Amelia—she was at the board meeting! She had federal marshals with her! They raided the corporate office an hour ago! Your father has been detained by the SEC, and they’ve seized all our bank accounts, our homes, and our trust funds!”
The world seemed to tilt beneath Ethan’s feet.
“W-what are you talking about?” he stammered, his voice cracking with sudden, unadulterated panic. “How could she know? We kept everything encrypted! We used offshore proxies!”
“I don’t know!” Margaret sobbed hysterically. “And... and Richard Jr.—he’s gone! His Miami safe house was raided by federal agents twenty minutes ago! We’ve been completely exposed!”
Ethan dropped his phone.
It hit the tarmac with a dull plastic clatter, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of cracks. Around him, the luxurious Miami airport dissolved into a waking nightmare. He looked across the tarmac and saw two men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing federal insignia stepping out of an unmarked black SUV parked near the VIP exit.

They weren't looking at the other passengers.
They were looking directly at him.
